WLS AM/FM SOLD

What possible need could you have for a PD when Jan Jeffries is in the building?

They are doing it to all of their recently bought stations. But we need to look at how radio has changed in just the past few years. In addition to the on-air staff and production, you now need web folks. Updates to the station's web pages, blogs, posts on Facebook, all require staff. New revenue does not often cover this additional expense.

Cumulus is quickly turning a once-great station into another of their low-rent properties. If they owned a mansion in Beverly Hills, it would end up being a run-down tenement within 1 year.

This is such a shame. WLS (both sides) are finally hitting on all cylinders. WLS-FM has never sounded better and the AM is back to having a lot of compelling local content. And now this.

Then again, why should we be surprised. They constantly remind us, once an hour, about how WLS is "a CUMULUS station." Jerks.

RAMP reports today :
Cumulus made cuts at its Los Angeles duo, including KLOS PD/afternoon guy Bob Buchmann and market legend Jim Ladd, who'd been doing nights on KLOS.

All of you need to fear.

Their numbers are majority 54+. Regardless what you think about the station, in the advertising arena they are useless. WLS-AM suffers the same issue.

KHITS is stronger in ad dollars with the morning drive numbers (#2 women 18-49, 25-54) and the stations 25-54 numbers are higher than WLS-FM even if their 6+ is lower.

I know a lot of you will be cheerleaders and live with your head in the sand. Jan Jeffries loves the Journey format. It is cheap to run, which WLS-FM isn't and will pit them right against KHITS, for more ad dollars.

The Journey is not doing well in Cincinnati.

With 12 or 13 music stations, 2 AM talkers an an educational station doing better in the 6+ PPM's, I do not see a compelling sales angle in this station. Even if all of the 1.9 is one a money demo, it would be hard to win or to come in second in a demo. I would bet somebody else's dime that WCKY AM made more money even with the higher cost of any kind of talk format. IMHO there were better things that could have been done with this signal.

Congrats to Dick Biondi!

Feeder reports:

"The immortal Dick Biondi this week was named The Greatest DJ of the 1960s. Amazingly, the 79-year-old Radio Hall of Famer is still going strong as Monday-through-Friday evening star on Cumulus Media oldies WLS-FM (94.7). Biondi’s legion of fans may have helped a bit after he promoted the poll on his website. Other Chicago radio icons in the top 10 were Larry Lujack (at No. 4) and Art Roberts (at No. 6)."

Bravo Dick Biondi who truly is the best Top 40 DJ of all time.
