WLS AM/FM SOLD

Here's hoping that WJMK or some other station picks up the music that WLS-FM used to play & brings Biondi & some others over.

That would pretty much be a return to the pre Jack-FM days. I, like others, doubt it will happen due to demographic issues.

I am not advocating back to "pre Jack-FM" days, but a good 60s & 70s mix, with some 80s thrown in can work. It doesn't have to be the "harder" rock that WLS-FM is now playing. I'm excluding the 50s & early 60s which the old WJMK played.
 
This topic was brought up at chicago media chat. It is a lot like the lars site. I just came across it by chance. There was something about WLS hiring these people so they cant go to another station. I don't know if I agree with this, it is a theory I didn't consider. I guess it could have some merit.

It has been rumored that at one time Bear Bryant had almost two hundred football players on scholarship, just so his team did not have to play against them. It might be cheaper to hire these guys rather than have to battle them.

I'm a businessman.  My take is that WLS/Cumulus management somehow has the notion that they have a "Biondi problem".
I get that.  I don't agree, but I get it.  Like it or not, I'll go so far as to say he's in all probability no longer suitable for a "money" daypart.  That doesn't mean there can't be a place for him where he can contribute somewhere else.

Personally I doubt that there'd be little, if any, negative effect on ratings or revenue by simply putting Biondi back on his original (1960) time slot.  9-Midnight. In the scheme of things for today's WLS-FM, they're still burying the guy....but at least they're giving him a measure of respect and putting him where his fans can find him.  Perhaps they could even reduce his verbiage (if they think that's so important), and "compensate" by giving him a weekend "special" show, where he can say/do/play whatever he wants.  Heck, they could put him on the "Big 89" Saturday nights when most the regular audience is either out for the evening, asleep, "overserved", or whatever.

But now, this lame plan for how they plan to execute the toy drive strikes me as something that's almost impossible to do.  Namely, taking a charitable holiday event with a long, successful, and distinguished history and turning it into something absolutely callous!

As one who's endured and witnessed loads and loads of corporate s(tuff) when the suits don't want someone around any longer,  this strikes me as another in a series of rather brazen attempts to make Biondi get fed up and quit.  Good for him (and his fans) if he doesn't.  The Dickey Brothers, Jan Jeffries, and/or anyone else responsible for this nasty bit of business know they can't fire Biondi....at least not without inviting a lawsuit.

This is not an intractable or unworkable situation.  Management should view Biondi as an asset instead of a problem and find a way to accommodate the man and his fans.  It absolutely could be done without any downside to the WLS brand.
 
It would be cool if Dick Biondi was on SiriusXM's 50's on 5 and was doing his thing for a national audience. There, he'd get to play the kind of music he (and I, for that matter) likes, and they could set up a link to Chicago so he could do his show right from home! Wishful thinking, of course, and if the rumored takeover of SiriusXM by Liberty Media occurs, there likely won't be any DJ's left on the service (and there go any chances of getting my wish. However, I won't stop hoping 'til there's nothing left to hope for).

Let's face it, WLS-FM is trying to force him out, and he would have no other local station to go to, so being on satellite would be the next best thing, or retirement, of course should he choose to do so.
 
I think it's safe to say that Dick Biondi does not want to retire. He has made the statement in interviews over the years that he wants to die with his headphones on. It would be a PR nightmare for WLS-FM if they fired him, but Jan Jeffries is doing everything in his power to make his life miserable.
 
I wonder if there's any way WJMK could make a play for Biondi again? CBS would probably give him way more leeway than Cumulus and I think he would be a better fit there.

That would be fantastic if he returned to WJMK (K-Hits)! It has become my favorite local station and having him back there would be going full circle, and guarantee the station remains on my preset 1! 8)
 
Trust me! Biondi does not want to retire. He loves being on the air. I just hope and pray that all this stress does not affect his health. I am not sure what Jan Jeffries is trying to accomplish. He had great ratings with a wonderful play list and than brought in great personalities like Fred Winston only to change the playlist, drop "Oldies" and turn off the microphones of the on air talent. He has the greatest DJ on the face of the earth "Dick Biondi" and yet trys to make him miserable by changing his time slot to 11pm to 2 am. Great hours for an 80 yr old man! Can you imagine walking to your car at 2 in the morning in a parking garage downtown Chicago? Dick has given so much to this city and he is being treated with disrespect. I have not listened to WLS FM since they changed their playlist. Wonder when the ratings will drop?

I wonder if they have a higher male listener rate now and if they have had any impact on Drive with the "lite" classic rock emphasis.

To be very candid and honest, as much as I deplore what they're doing to Biondi, and as much as I'd like to see management find a place for him....meaning a place where he can contribute as opposed to being a "museum piece"....the apparent overall ratings bump is exactly what I'd expect.
