WLS-AM TO HAVE "REWOUND" DAY ON MEMORIAL DAY!

He was certainly a morning drive superstar in more major markets than anybody I can think of.

I believe that the late Robert W. Morgan left KHJ/LA in 1970 or 1971 to become a talk show host at WIND, but he only lasted for about a year or so before returning to LA, and Van Dyke took over mornings at KHJ in either 1971 or 1972.

Does anyone know if he and Larry Lujack ever worked simultaneously at any Chicago radio station?

Marv,

Lujack never worked at WIND, and WIND was the only station in Chicago that Morgan worked at. You are likely writing from a Los Angeles perspective on this, which is worlds different from the Chicago one. It was only from being a radio nut that I knew who Robert W was when he came to WIND, but WIND carried on as if he was Bob Hope or Johnny Carson or somebody that people in the Chicago area had heard of. They never seemed to grasp that 99.9% of the people had no idea who he was and all the billboards and outside advertising would have been better spent to promote their music format.

I thought about that when Brandmeier was simulcast in L A before becoming an "L.A. only" morning man for the couple of years. He pulled better numbers in L A than Robert W did in Chicago (yes - way different times, but just making the point) but was just another morning guy in L A that came and went.

When the Morgan thing failed on WIND, WIND eventually got stronger with a true local morning man, while Morgan simply went back to L A and bounced around a bit. Probably few remember his late 80's comeback on Emmis' Power 106 when he just showed on there one Monday morning with little to no pre-publicity.

I'm trying to remember who replaced Morgan on WIND. Might have been Bob DelGiorno, but I'm not sure.

Morgan and Lujack never worked together in Chicago.

Morgan left WIND a year to the day when his initial contract expired. Bob DelGiorno (or Dell to his Ft. Wayne friends) replaced Morgan.

ZAP - You're Morganized!!!

Thanks for the prompt replies; I did know that Lujack worked only at WLS & WCFL, but I'm not sure when he worked at either station.

I did know that Morgan worked at WIND after leaving LA, and WIND was apparently a 'MOR' (later AC) powerhouse in Chicago a la KMPC here in LA.

I was merely wondering if Morgan worked at either WLS or WCFL after leaving WIND but before he returned to LA in 1971, which he apparently never did.

Thanks!!!!!!!

Boys and girls, I LOVE this discussion.

_____________

WIND WAS MOR (began in the early 50's with its heyday in the mid-60's) ala kmpc.

When Morgan was hired, a year or so after LONGTIME MORNING KING Howard Miller was fired in '68.Morgan became the FIRST morning man in the #1 music" (meaning oldies) format (aprox 1970 after LOTS of floundering).

Bob Del (Giorno) and Benson and Russell followed Morgan (maybe B&R were just after Robert W) We are talking a bit more than 35 years ago.

Hardly seems possible it was THAT long ago.

There's an aircheck on http://www.radiotimeline.com/home.htm of Connie Szerszen playing Led Zeppelin and The Who on WIND. It's from 1975. I have no recollection of WIND ever rocking like that. I'm guessing it was a short-lived thing, or else they let Connie break format on her evening show.

Most likely they allowed her to "break format." WIND spet some time trying to be "a button on the car radio" next to WGN, WLS and WCFL.

Alot of WIND's older target was watching tv during Conne's shift, so to drop the daypart demo target a bit would have been good.

Does anyone happen to lnow when Lujack worked at either WLS or WCFL?

Also, Dick Biondi was on the air here in LA (at KRLA) in the mid-to-late sixties when I was growing up; that LOADED airstaff also included Charlie O'Donnell (who'se been the announcer on 'Wheel Of Fortune' since day one), Bob 'The Newlywed Game' Eubanks, and some fellow named Casey Kasem.

Did Biondi make a name (or a spectacle!!!) of himself at WLS, WCFL or another Chicago station before or after he worked here?

I believe I heard him (and John 'Records' Landecker) on your oldies station (Magic 104?) while visiting my relatives in Chicago in August of 1996.

Re: Dick Biondi -- WCBA, Corning, NY -- famous for a couple of years at WKBW, Buffalo - KRLA, LA , WLS, Chicago, 5 years at WCFL. Returned to Chi-town in 1984 to launch oldies WJMK. Also at WNMB/North Myrtle Beach, SC.

Lujack:

WCFL 1967
WLS 1967 - 1972
WCFL 1972 - 1976 (including six months playing "beautiful music," until WLS bought out his 'CFL contract)
WLS 1976 - 1987

Biondi worked in Chicago both before and after his stint in L.A.
