WLS and Noterdame.

I noticed that WLS is once again the home for Noterdame Football and Basketball. Although their web site hasn't been updated to reflect this yet, they were running The Kevin White Show in the 7:00 hour this morning, and the game is on now. What is strange is that ESPN 1000's Dave Juday and Chet Coppock are still involved with the broadcasts. I would think, that because now WLS and WMVP are now under different ownership, ESPN hosts would no longer be on WLS. Furthermore, all these months of CollegeSports doesn't seem to match the WLS format, which doesn't even have a sports reporter on staff. Finally, these games are interruptingthe flow of talk programs the listener would come to expect to hear. I just don't understand why the games aren't on ESPN 1000 where they would fit much better.

My apologies to all alumni, staff students and fans. The thread is Notre Dame Football. After posting, I wasn't sure if it looked right, so the error has been corrected.

Despite the fact that WMVP and WLS are under separate ownerships doesn't mean that previosly existing agreements are not continuing. Besides..Norte Dame may feel that WLS's 24 hour non-directional signal may be of benefit, especially as the days of fall approach and the effect of shorter daytime hours and post sunset coverage areas.

As far as football on WLS...weekend programming doesn't receive the same strong ratings as the weekday programming and while it does interrupt the regular schedule, it's only for 12 or 13 weeks and may be seen as an image boost and weekend cume building opportunity for WLS.

Wrong. It's all about the money. The contract was signed in hopes of securing sponsors that would generate more revenue than the regular weekend programming. WMVP kept bumping the ND games due to their other sports contracts. They couldn't run clean and were doing a lousy job of selling it.

It may also have something to do with the very Irish John Gallagher running WLS.

I believe the contract is for three years with renewal opportunities.

Actually, this is not the first stint for WLS to carry the Notre Dame football broadcasts. I remember them being on WLS in the early 60's, even after WLS had become the Top 40 giant, and how they would "pre-empt" playing the hits to air the
games on Saturdays. I think this was no later than 1965, when "Super CFL" became competition. But that was the time when WLS had Notre Dame football, and of course, WCFL still had the White Sox broadcasts thru the 1966 season when
that contract ran out.
