WLS-FM adds specialty shows to boost falling ratings

(Jan Jeffries changes a format that most listeners were happy with and ratings fall--what a shock!)

From: http://chicagoradioandmedia.com/message-board

* * WLS-FM has added some specialty shows to help boost its slipping ratings. Each weeknight at 7:00pm will be the "70's @ 7." That will be followed each weeknight by the "80's @ 8" at 8:00pm. Both segments will be hosted by Chicago radio legend John Records Landecker. (No, there are no plans for a "60's @ 6" segment.) Additionally, every Friday night at 10:00pm, starting tonight, will be "WLS in Concert." This show will feature an uninterrupted concert performance by one of WLS-FM core artists. Tonight's concert will be by The Eagles.

Those are hardly "specialty shows" but, instead, are features in a daypart that has low radio usage and is not, generally, evaluated for agency buys which are 6 AM to 7 PM. It's the same music "dressed up" to create PPM appointment listening occasions.

The 10 PM concert seems to be a fairly clever idea, since the DMCA won't allow pureplay streams to run such same-artists many in a row type programming.

As to slipping ratings, the books following the change were up significantly in 25-54. Stations pretty much dismiss the December and Holiday books for a variety of reasons, so the proof will be in how well WLS-FM does in January and beyond.
