WLS MUSIC RADIO RETURNS!

According to "Inside Radio", WLS will air "retro radio" ala WABC all day and night on Memorial Day.

WLS streams online but who among us won't go out to the car radio after the sun goes down to pull in the Big 89 for old time's sake?
Now, if they'd only do their end of year "time sweep" at midnight New Years Eve!

ah, the good ol' days.

i too, remember and tuned in for the Midnight Montage.
i was once told that was put together each year by Mark Thompson who was "Little Tommy" on the Larry Lujack Show.
The Big 89, W-L-S. . . . .

Growing up in SA,and when KONO powered down. I would listed to KOMA and WLS. I moved up here in the 70's and I had a preset for WLS"World's Largest Store" -Sears -BTW.. It will be nice to hear "radio" once more.

AM radio in the 70's. When 1190 powered down at sunset and KRRV in Sherman signed off at midnight you had to listen to something. WOAI and a station out of New Orleans were options but the station of choice was WLS. You would sometimes hear something new that KLIF wasn't playing but not often. The thing that used to get me was the weather reports. "It's 15 degrees here on the Loop with a wind chill of -30."

No thanks! I'll have to try to catch some of this when it's on.

And WGN stands for "World's Greatest Newspaper"... owned by Tribune. I can't wait to hear the "Big 89 Rewind".

The Big 89 Rewind. That's really clever. Did you dream that up or is that actually what they are calling it?

That was in Bob Feder's column in the Chicago Sun-Times the other day. I wish I could take credit. ;)

starting at midnight memorial day?

Hey 'LS web crew...please make sure your streaming is alive and well next Monday!!!

Hope this entry is not bogus because I will try to listen in online. I grew up with WLS on the farm when I was a teenager in the late 60s/early 70s. After a hellish day in high school, marchin' in the band and taking care of my 4-H rabbits I would listen in the evenings when WING's signal from Dayton faded out at sunset which made me fliip over to 89 WLS. Kris Eric Stevens and John Landecker were the evening personalities at that time. Gotta hear those classic PAMS and Thunder(Tanner) jingles all over again!

I think WWL should use the occasion to turn on IBOC at night.

It's the real deal, 'LS is "Rewinding" with the likes of Lujack and, I believe, John Landecker. JRL is now afternoon drive at True Oldies, 94.7, WZZN, in Chicago. Formerly, it was WLS-FM.

5am-midnight Memorial day.

Matt over at bigappleairchecks says he has someone who is supposed to record it for him. I spoke with a WLS insider and they say this should be a great day with all the people who are returning to the airwaves to bring back memories.

Hey -- I got a note yesterday saying they will use the old "touchtones" to give listeners a chance to win t-shirts and CDs commorating the event! Cool!

Big 89 Rewind'
Larry Lujack kicks off star-studded flashback of Top 40 era on WLS

BY ROBERT FEDER Sun-Times Columnist
It's going to be a Memorial Day to remember when WLS-AM (890) turns back the clock to its Top 40 heyday and brings back some of its greatest stars.

Kipper McGee, program director of the ABC-owned news/talk station, is assembling a dream team of WLS alums for what they're calling "The Big 89 Rewind."

From 5 a.m. to midnight May 28, regular programming will be pre-empted for a Memorial Day spectacular starring Superjock Larry Lujack, Fred Winston, John Records Landecker, Jeff Davis, Chris Shebel and Tom Kent. All were part of the '70s and '80s rock era at WLS.

Also appearing throughout the day will be WLS news veterans Lyle Dean, Catherine Johns and Gil Gross and sportscaster Les Grobstein, among others.
