WLS on XM satellite radio?

Disney is interested in selling its ABC radio division. XM satellite radio has expressed an interest in buying it. I believe ABC owns WLS. Maybe we'll hear the Roe Conn show on satellite radio soon.

Wouldn't it be great if Musicradio once again graced the Chicago--and beyond--metropolitan area? Of course, it won't happen, but is nice to think about. Move the talk to 94.7 on the FM side.

My boss and I discussed that idea just yesterday. Bring back the
great jocks (Winston, Lujack, Landecker and others) and get
them to do what they did and again, make great radio they way
it should be.

great concept. but its 2005. do you really think anyone is going to flip to AM to hear wls in 2005? i would love it dont get me wrong. but the audience from 30 years ago is now in their 50s-60s. not exactly the target demo of most stations these days. i was a kid when i listened. now i'm 37..
______________

Does anyone have any idea how WSM-AM in Nashville does rating/revenue-wise with their classic country format? Could you compare WSM to a WLS-AM Oldies format? With the demise of WJMK, there just might be a void for the AM band to fill for those of us who won't see 50 again:)

Throw in a Sirrus/XM connection for those people who need the newest technology.

WSM came within a hair's breadth of dropping the Classic Country a year or so ago. WLS dropping the format for AM oldies. Revenue wise, it would be a disaster.
______________
Soon to set the world record for recieving Nigerian scam and phising e-mails!

Why would WLS-AM HD 2 or on XM have to be an OLDIES format? Their heyday was the best in radio, but WLS' hallmark was that they played the classics and the hits! When Ric Lippincott pulled the currents (that they were playing) in 1988 and substituted music by Sinatra, Lettermen, Dean Martin, etc. next to recent gold; that was what finally put the stake in the heart of the Big 89. It wasn't current. It wasn't "now" anymore. It was "then."

They would make for a great Hot AC/Adult CHR that leans to the older end of the demo & throw in all those great songs from the past 30 years. Maybe some specialty oldies programming like they used to do. Remember the Saturday Night Oldies Show and the Classic Rock Hour? Let the kids have their Kiss and the parents enjoy some old .. and new music. Refresh the jingles with the same musical logo. Pick up where they left off in 1986.

Oh, and *new* jocks that fit the WLS mold. They are guardians of the brand, from Chicago (or recognized here) and will to have fun without insulting the audience. That was always very important to WLS Musicradio. All those that were mentioned above were a great part of the station's history, but have moved on. Micheal Jordan's return is never looked anything like his Bull's days. Blues Brothers II movie was nothing like the original. See where I am going here? Maybe an appearance here and there by a WLS legend, or perhaps a recognized name in AM Drive, but again .. Keep in mind: WLS did not bring back Gene Taylor or Clark Weber when they needed a new voice in the late 70's and into the 80's.

And DON'T put it on FM 95! WLS was always the AM station. The legend lives there. The FM was just along for the ride for a few years as well as simulcasting AM 89 - not the other way around.

Just my $.02

Wasn't it the listeners' reactions to the dropping of the format that prompted WSM management to retain the Classic Country?

I think so.

Here's what really needs to happen guys. If ABC is bought out by Sirrius, putting the 89 WLS Musicradio up on channel 89 with those guys doing it FROM Chicago would be an excellent way to gain a massive older sub-base. In fact, put "WLS" up on 89 and also put "WABC" up on 77 with the jingles and as much talent as they can put together now. They'd have so many grey-hairs getting Sirrius in droves it would be amazing. Older folks are PISSED and most are wiling at this point to find something else to listen to, even if it costs some bucks. WLS and WABC are legendary nationwide. Utilizing their image would be a great way to do oldies.
______________

This is a radio geeks ultimate dream, and I would love to see it, but from a financial standpopint, it is suicide and impracticle. We would have a better chance being invaded by lil Green Martians before this occurs.

WLS as N/T is making some good money.

BTW, Sirius at this point cant buy new underware for itself (sarcasm for they are strapped). And I am pretty sure there are laws in place where the satellite holders can't buy terrestrial holdings either.
______________
