Wls-TV 10pm news in SD?

I was watching the repeat of the 10pm news at 1:05am, and noticed that the news was being broadcast in standard definition. I also noticed that they were broadcasting from the old news set, rather than the street front news set. Does anyone know if the old news set is broadcasting with standard definition equipment, or with high definition equipment, but the show was reformatted to standard definition?

I have a standard definition TV set with a digital converter box, but I noticed that this isn't normal for WLS-TV, since I have the box to display programs in letterbox. That way, HD programs aren't cropped. SD programs have the black bars all around the picture, while HD have only the black bars at the top & bottom.
