WLSH 1410 Lansford PA 2004

Now retired (both from radio and other vocations) I do a lot of odd jobs, mostly home repair, painting, plumbing, etc.
Anything to get me out of the house.

The portable radio is always along. And WLSH is usually the first choice for music. It's been that way since we moved here to NEPA. The wife herself has been an AM-radio/Oldies person since her teens, and she finds these stations on AM like a bat finds a mosquito.

WCNR 930 Bloomsburg ..... WFBS 1280 Berwick ..... the latter-day WHLM 930 Bloomsburg ...... WAZL 1490 Hazleton (now a form of Country) ..... WMBT Shenandoah ...... and WLSH.

Their midday show is terrific ; requests and dedications. I forget the gal's name who does it. Amy? Katy? Her show sounds as live and local and homey as can be imagined.

After she leaves the air, the station's playlist drifts discernably to the mellower A/C - Oldies side. And I don't hear much of them in the morning. But for afternoon roof and paint jobs, they're perfect.

Back when Arbitron wasn't so uptight about releasing their entire 12+ results, T-102 and WLSH were the only two local-area stations to show in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ratings on a faithful basis. They would do so in the lower regions of the book, with like a 0.7 and a 0.4. But they would show.
T-102's appearance is understandable. They have a huge signal; they're on FM, and their consistent plus professional approach makes for a well-earned benefit. Yet, WLSH is playing music on a monaural, AM, directional daytimer.

Oldies 1410 is doing things right, and (to us here) have been doing them right for quite some time.

Though I 'listen-at-work' only middays, with the portable, I figured an update here would be appropriate. After all, if a station is basically designed to be a listen-at-work oasis (and WLSH is a daytimer anyway), then maybe I can relay some impressions from very recent days?

Songs incuded:
Three Nights a Week -- Fats Domino
I Will Survive
Who Wears Short Shorts
Earth Angel (the original, maybe ; not the Penguins)
Dear Lady Twist
Drake, Rattle and Roll :- )
Burning Love
It's Only Make Believe
I Wonder Why
Running Bear
Playboy -- Gene & Debbie
Pipeline
You Got It -- Orbison
Blue on Blue
New Orleans
Run To Him
Just Walking In The Rain -- Johnny Ray
I Love The Night Life

The fact that they *often* throw in these random long-lost songs gives a sparkle to the 'average' oldies, like Wild Thing, Peggy Sue, Denise, Sweet Caroline, Runaround Sue, and the like.

Certainly, their production isn't on a par with, say, WCBS-FM or WOGL. But as long as they keep churning out those lost songs, indiscriminately, I'll opt for them first. As well, their meteorologist is accurate, and the short newscasts make for a nice pause.

Yesterday, in fact, the gal on the air did an impromptu :20 minute interview with a Minersville dignitary, about that boro's Memorial Day festivities .... and about how much of the goings-on was centered on Coal Country, present and past. There were many mentions of places such as Ashland, Nesquehoning, Tamaqua, etc., which gave the entire NON-MUSIC segment a distinctly regional feel of unity.

WLSH is a fine station.
