WLTW HD2 Playing Rock-Hopefully Just a Glitch

I've had 106.7 HD2 on for about 45 minutes, and they have been playing classic rock, instead of their usual country music.
Most likely it is a glitch, as they still ID'd at the top of the hour as New York Country. There was also a mention of Q 104.3. The display is showing the names of the rock tunes.
HD side channels seem to be such a low priority that it may be a while till they get around to fixing this.

Turned it on again a while ago. WLTW HD2 had an announcement at the top of the hour, "New York has a new radio station coming May 12 on 106.3." Evidently that will be the starting date for WLTW HD2 to be carried on the new translator located at 4 Times Square.
They are still rocking, with liners such as "Classic rock heard here." Perhaps this is somehow related to the impending simulcast on the translator. But I can't imagine them competing with sister classic rock station Q 104.3- this has got to be temporary. And they still ID on the hour as New York Country. As there have been rumors that 106.3 will ultimately carry smooth jazz, could the classic rock be a transitional format?

Is it a simulcast of Q104?
It is not a rebroadcast of Q 104.3. After checking online, it appears to be The Classic Rock Channel, on IHeartRadio. Up till now WLTW HD2 had been carrying Country Road, also from IHeartRadio. The frequent spots mentioning the upcoming broadcast on 106.3 seem to be hinting this is a transitional format for WLTW HD2.

Do they plug in jocks like Doc Reno on "The Classic Rock Channel"? New Yorkers already have had enough of him on Q104 as it is - and his airshift is late nights!

Hey, maybe the classic rock format on Q104.3 the last fifteen years is a "glitch" and it'll become a country station on May 12! ::)

RadioInsight.com states that WLTW's owner Clear Channel has registered the following websites: NewYorkSmoothJazz.com, and NewYorkSmooth.com.
It now appears to me that country is history on WLTW HD2 :-[. My guess is that WLTW HD2 will be sampling various channels from IHeartRadio, and then switch to a smooth jazz format by May 12, to be simulcast on the new 106.3 translator. IHeartRadio does have a smooth jazz format called, Smooth Jazz. Of course they could instead start a locally produced smooth jazz station.

If this happens will Emmis stay with Smooth Jazz on 101.9 HD2? How far with the 106.3 translator reach?

Why can't country music gain a toehold in NYC, even on an HD2 :( ? Clear Channel has 4 other stations besides WLTW in this market. I'm disappointed they haven't moved country to the HD2 of one of those. The format is doing well on nearby Thunder Country, in NJ. They are tied for number 2 among music stations in their market.

I'm with ya. I don't understand it either. I get a great signal from Thunder where I live now, and can only hope the 106.3 translator does not mess that up. If all else fails, I'll keep listening to country on my blackberry while at work, and the Music Choice country station on Fios at home.

With my knowledge, WLTW's HD2 is flipping to classic rock to compete with "Q104" and WRXP. New York City had so many competitions for rock such as "K-Rock" and WAPP's "The Apple". Hudson Valley has WPDH and WBPM are the two classic rocks stations, and WBPM is the one under Randy Turner. I hope if 106.3 will do better starting May 12th, just a week before the May 21st date which is Judgment Day, the one tat Harold Camping mentions on Family Radio.

They own Q-104, so that would be a dumb move all the way around. Why would they compete with themselves?

When was the last time New York got 2 brand new radio stations (not just formats) in a month? Of course one of them might as well not exist, the other will have a commercially viable format on a bad signal. Remember that this signal will only be reliable in Manhattan, but it can penetrate the office buildings in Midtown, hence it will likely have an office friendly format. Lighter-than-Lite AC or smooth jazz.

This might just sell some HD radios if they advertise that listeners can hear it static free in all 5 boroughs on 106.7 HD2. Especially with a format that has loyal listeners who might subscribe to XM just for their format, like smooth jazz.

As much as I love dance music, I would not want a dance format on 106.3. While it is on a frequency receivable on every radio, its signal is way worse than Pulse 87, and as such, it will fail with that handicap.

Smooth jazz would seem to be a smart choice for Clear Channel to put on 106.3. It could discourage a competitor from introducing a Liter than Lite format that would draw office listeners from WLTW.
But it would seem to be a bit risky to build a station around a translator. When the contract to lease the translator has ended, the owner is free to relay another station that may make a better offer.

Party FM learned that the hard way when Party 101.5 went off the air. I think the lease agreement was in place before JVC took control of TMO.

WLTW HD2's stunting continues. They are sampling a different channel from IHeartRadio each day till May 12 launch date of their translator. Today they are carrying their Real Oldies Channel. IHeartRadio does offer a wide variety of commercial free music channels.

According to the FCC coverage map the 60db contour goes as far west as Newark and as far east as Brooklyn and Queens, so I think it will have a pretty good signal in the nearby suburbs too.
