WLTW PD OUT

R&R is reporting that WLTW's PD Jim Ryan is leaving the station......Chris Conley who is a veteran AC programmer taking over as PD.......An so another one leaves the WLTW building.

Wow.....that's just....unbelievable. The guy who had to fire all those deejays is now fired himself. :-[

Maybe our good friend Otto Mation will be taking over jock duty?

The Dentist didn't like my post "Will The Last One Out Shut Off The LITE?"!

Ryan is getting while the getting is good. He has proven himself as perhaps "the programmer" for soft AC, Clear Channel is about to go private and he ain't getting any younger. By hanging out the consulting shingle now, he can grab a lot of business from GMs and owners who want some of his "magic" and are willing to pay. He has already cut the deal to consult WLTW (and probably other CC owned LITE stations), so the cash flow is there.

That may not be true... All Access said Ryan was "stepping down, effective May 1st", so given there's a set date 9with more than three months in advance) it may have been of Mr. Ryan's volition.

oh no! quick! someone start a "bye bye LiteFM" thread just like the bye bye Krock one!!!

/sarcasm.

Obviously they can get anyone else to come in a fire people. Or re-arrange the liner cards!

Once again you are seeing old, highly paid GMs thrown out to make way for less expensive station group GMs who can watch over five stations on one salary. Ryan was part of the old economic structure so too expensive to keep.

In today's Daily News, David Hinckley notes that Ryan will now leave Lite-FM on May 22, and not the previously mentioned date of May 1:

In retrospect, I would actually make the argument that Ryan, if this was indeed his decision, did so upon the departure of Valerie Smaldone. The timing of these two events could not be close enough, especially after Ryan saw other jocks like Buchner and Kennedy exit.

When this broke yesterday I came here and saw some mention of , then headed over to the Dentist's board, only two postings, one w/deleted followup.

I have read comments on that other board indicating a degree of friction between the dentist and Mr Ryan, but really, when the PD of the Nation's top billing station departs, the silence over there is quite Stalin-esque.

Jim Ryan has been a great PD for 11+ years at "Lite-FM", but he's gone for good. In the mortal words of Porky Pig "Th-th-that's all folks!"

I remember Joe McCoy was let go at CBS-FM back in 2004 and he was a great PD for years prior to Dave Logan. Joe McCoy has been a great PD at CBS-FM for such a long time ever since last week where he was sounded now than it was back then when he was working at CBS-FM as PD. That was where Joe was on the NY Radio Greats.

Batman beats Jim Ryan at the CC Joker. Chris Conley will join PD for this "Lite-FM" format soon at the CC Joker cluster.

Yep, I noticed that too. The silence was certainly deafening. In the meantime, there's still plenty of posts there from folks complaining they can't hear Bob Grant due to Seton Hall b-ball broadcasts on WABC, as well as why country music would be such a great format for NYC radio.

And I bet half the threads were started by "Barry"...

Countdown to Jim Ryan's Departure

Okay, so to bump this old posts, Jim Ryan will have 2 more weeks as PD for WLTW until he leaves as of May 22nd, Jim will no longer be working as PD at Lite-FM. Chris Conley will be taking its place. Chris was a PD at WBEB's B-101.1, a AC station that it covered by CBS-FM since if you are down in Philly, he will be taking the job. Is that true?

Huh?? Yes Conley's in. Very good programmer. He'll carry on the great work Jim Ryan did at LITE.
What does CBS-FM have to do with Philly??

I think what DF was trying to say is that both WCBS-FM and WBEB operate on 101.1 FM... I'm kinda sure that's what he was going for...

Thanks for breaking the code :)

Thanks a lot! Now Conley is taking over Jim Ryan's place, he will be fixing the music to make the station "Lite-r". Play some slower stuff that WLTW used to play, and bring back the slogan such as "New York's One and Only Lite Music Station" or "New York's Continuous Light Rock Favorites" or so on. Make the playlist a lot softer AC-ish, not hotter AC-ish than WPLJ. This is according to this link to WRNQ's "Lite-FM" site where it does have the playlist:

It'll be interesting to see, or rather hear the changes when and if they come. But I have to wonder how far this new PD will go given that Ryan is going to consult LTW and they aren't exactly hurting in the ratings.

CC forced some pretty severe changes on Lite FM in the last year and I believe that those changes were a big part of why Ryan resigned. That being said, Ryan saw a drop and then brought the numbers back up.

That's just it. Lite-FM doesn't sound Lite anymore. Sounds more like a Hot AC when it shouldn't. Move the HD2 channel back over to the main channel. Classic Lite is what it should sound like.
