I know what you are trying to say. They have gone far away from the original concept of light music. They are kind of a typical but sometimes sounding confused ac station.

I realize they do great book after book so if it ain't broke, don't fix it. On the other hand, I wonder what they will sound like in the next five years? Will it be more up tempo musically? Time will tell.

That really shouldn't be a surprise since most lite stations upped the tempo and style years ago. Many used to play Streisand, Diamond, and Manilow too, yet there are less complaints on radio boards about that.

So?

They are #1 and they can call it whatever they like. The listeners seem to agree.

This is hardly like saying "salt free" and putting salt in.

Exactly. Perhaps one reason why they are #1 is precisely because their musical selections have branched out further than Manilow, Streisand, etc. (in fact, those particular artists aren't even heard on the Lite).

Lite FM is the hardest AC station I have ever heard. No other AC station plays "Another One Bites the Dust", at least to my knowledge.

Also, it is interesting that they continue to take some pretty big risks, considering being number one. Lite FM has sounded more Hot AC like lately. It would be interesting if someone decides to go against Lite FM. WNEW should do it, but they won't.<P ID="signature">______________

They were also one of the few to play "Livin' La Vida Loca" back when it was a current hit. Same thing with Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" -- I've never heard any other mainstream AC station play that song.

And they've gotten <BLINK>VERY</BLINK> Disco-heavy ever since they felt the need to try to compete with WNEW's "Rhythmic AC" format. If you like hearing Barry White, Donna Summer, and the Bee Gees multiple times a day, then WLTW is definitely the station for you!

Infinity is stupid. They had WNEW going as a legitimate mainstream AC station for a few months, and then dumped it. Then they missed a golden opportunity to modernize CBS-FM by gradually turning it into an AC format (they were already playing a lot of mid- to late-'80s music on CBS-FM at one point). So we're stuck with WNEW doing Rhythmic AC and WCBS-FM doing some God-awful watered-down Rock format.

A decade ago, NYC had three AC stations: "Today's 93.1" (WPAT-FM), "Mix 105" (WMVX), and "106.7 Lite FM" (WLTW). Actually four, if you count WPAT-FM's simulcast on 930 WPAT (in AM Stereo!). Now, all we have is WLTW. And we now have three Spanish stations, which is stupid because all Hispanic people have the same taste in music and therefore they only need one Spanish-format station to listen to (right, David!!???).

Yawn. It's almost comical to read comments like these. When radio stations take risks, posters deride them for jeopardizing their "brand of programming." When they don't, other posters complain how bland and boring they sound, and how radio is sure to be flushed down the toilet in the near future, especially with satellite radio broadening the risk spectrum.

Oh, wait, you must not have meant *these* kind of risks. Ya know, the kind Lite is taking. You must have meant *other* kinds of risks. Yeah, that's it. Only the risks *you* like.

Hey, it is interesting when a station takes risks and adds extra variety, but why fix something that isn't broken?

It's a great station...more power to them on this format.

Re: WLTW's can call it whatever they want.

I think this post is saying why do they call themselfs lite if they play
VARIETY music. The station does sound great but why call 106.7 lite when it should be Variety 106.7 It is an injustice to radio formats but then again why change their label. They are Number 1.

I suggested they should change the name a few months ago, but learned that wouldn't be a good idea. The music they play isn't really lite, but hey, it is successful. I am still confused on why they are messing around with the number one station.

I've noticed they often only say "106.7" between songs, not "Lite FM". They have also been using liners which make some reference to "variety" (I forget the exact wording). I think it would make more sense for them to say "106.7, Lite FM" only when introducing a song that is truly "light", and otherwise say "106.7 WLTW" when introducing a more uptempo song -- but then again, I'm a radio geek who likes to hear call letters on the air in more than just the hourly ID.

I don't know a Hot AC station that would play a song like "Another One Bites the Dust." Hot AC stations tend to play lighter sounding or rock-ballad currents, along with some 90's. Lite plays songs people know and nothing that would seem too out of place in an office atmosphere...<P ID="signature">______________

Well, Hot AC's have a broader playlist now days, so I wouldn't be surprised if they play Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust".

"Lite" is whatever Jim Ryan says it is.

What about PLJ?

I'm pretty sure I've heard PLJ play that song, and they're considered a Hot AC. Has anybody else noticed that PLJ also seems to be playing fewer songs from the 70's again? They seem to have opened up the playlist to many more 80's and 90's tracks and certain artists like Elton John which they didn't play as much in the past few years, but the 70's music seems to be gone again.

Well, I was thinking about PLJ when I wrote the post about "Another One Bites the Dust". PLJ has very likely played that song before. I noticed also that they are cutting down a little on 70s. I wonder how PLJ will do in the next book.

Well, I don't agree with his interpretation of what lite music is, but then again, AC stations have become more uptempo the past few years, but none as hard as "Lite FM". I guess in a way, they are still "New York's One and Only Lite Music Station" even though they don't use that slogan now.

Westlife:

By the station still calling themselves Lite-FM, I think it refers more to the WLTW call signs then the style of music they play.

On the July 4th weekend Lite-FM was playing number 1 songs of the 70s.On Saturday July 2nd a little after 5PM I've heard, "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" by Bachman Turner Overdrive. Although this is not a hard rocking song, AC stations back in 1974 like WNEW-AM 1130 went nowhere near this song and Lite-FM didn't play it 20 years ago.
