WLUM CP

just noticed WLUM got a CP for:

drop from 20,000kw (Directional) to 8,880kw (Non directional) from a different location. Did anything take place yet?
______________

They're downgrading? Where is the current location? Where would the new one be?

They are for sure downgrading their power but upping their tower height. Doesn't seem to effect their coverage much but it does take some off. The CP was granted on the 28th of November. Not sure where the new location is. They are currently on the channel 18 tower with WXSS and WKLH.

WJZI also has a CP that will up the power but downgrade the signal. Upping to 16,000 watts but dropping the tower height.
______________

I wonder if this will clear up the multi-path problem 102.1 had on Marquette's campus... I always had problems with them (and the others on 18's tower) in our work van driving around campus.

In both cases the power drop / increase probably makes up for the move.

It looks like WLUM's signal is a downgrade while WJZI's is an upgrade.

WLUM:
Currently they broadcast with 20kw @ 232m which is 1kw less then the maximum wattage they could use at that heightfor a class B station. Their CP is for 8.8kw @ 257m which is 8.7kw less then the maximum wattage of 17.5kw they can use at that height.

WJZI:
Currently they broacast with 12.5kw @ 302m which is the maximum wattage they can use at that height. However their CP is for 16kw @ 270m which is 500 watts higher then the maximum wattage of 15.5kw allowed for a class B station at a height of 270m.

I thought they were limited by other stations on adjacent frequencies and that's why they were at 20kw.

I can't remember if they're moving to the American tower or 58's tower. They are currently on the Sinclair (18) tower with WKLH and WXSS.

Their coverage won't change much. It's not really a downgrade...in fact this may improve several bad spots in their coverage area.
______________

The CP states the tower owner is Weigel Broadcasting, so I assume 58's tower.

Like Marquette's campus?

I live within eyesight of the 12 and 58 towers... no activity on the stick at this time. I'll let you know if I see anyone on the tower.

The old site is the channel 18 tower; the new one is the tower shared by 12 and 58.

While the overall change in coverage does appear minimal, it does also appear to be a downgrade. According to the FMPower program the maximum permissible power at their old elevation was 21kw; at the new site, 17.5kw would be authorized. I suppose the reduction is required if they're to go non-directional, as they're short-spaced to four stations.

(I figured on WXLC in Waukegan but didn't realize three other stations entered into the equation. In fact, every Milwaukee-licensed station except WMYX is short-spaced to Chicago.)

----------------------------

Regarding WMIL, the power reduction is required by an increase in antenna height. Both powers (old and new) are the maximum allowed for that antenna location. (without regard to short-spacing, though they would seem to be just as short-spaced to WCKG 105.9 as WLUM is to WTMX 101.9) WMIL is moving from the ch. 24 tower to the one shared by channels 10 and 36.

58's tower Doc.

Actually 12 and 58 have seperate (but close) towers. WLUM is going onto the 58 tower.

WJZI has already moved to the American tower, having moved from the ch 24 tower.

The big difference is that WLUM is going from DIRECTIONAL to OMNI.

I wonder if they miss their old tower in Elm Grove now?

We are moving to a different tower, more height, hense we need to drop power a little. There should be little effect on the coverage.

I pity the guys that need to climb those towers in the dead of winter!

I've got WTMX/Skokie (101.9), WXLC/Waukegan (102.3), & WNWC-FM/Madison (102.5) but what's the 4th? (I'm guessing it's not co-channel class A WQLF in Lena, IL)

Actually it *is* WQLF.

And not WNWC-FM, but WMUK in Kalamazoo. Looks like they get that one excused because the interference area is over the lake.

> Actually it *is* WQLF.

Gotcha... That would explain why in the summer, depending on where I am in Rockford, I either get Q102 or WLUM.

You're not going to climb?
