WLUP Not Going Away?

UPDATE - WLUP NOT GOING AWAY AFTER - ALL!!

WLUP 97.9FM has made an announcement during their commercial breaks today that the demise of WLUP is not to be!

While it is TRUE that EMF / KLOVE will take - over 97.9FM, WLUP will continue operating on 101.1-HD2., they'll be streaming on their official website at wlup.com, and via the WLUP Android & I-Phone apps!

Additionally, they will maintain their verified Facebook and Twitter social media accounts

The Loop LIVES ON!!

Please. The same type of thing has been done on many, many prior occasions in various cities. The HD2 channel, online stream, whatever is usually a low budget shell of the defunct analog station whose namesake it bears.

Why would everyday listeners go out of their way to hear a completely unremarkable classic rock playlist?

They could always broadcast this on the internet. Just register the domain and broadcast. You can still sell ad space to support the internet station.

What happens when Merlin sells 101.1?

True. The new owners will not have any sentimental reasons to preserve Classic Rock on the HD-2 channel.

And let's face it. When a station moves to an HD subchannel, the DJs get fired, no song is ever announced, the playlist gets frozen in time and the same songs will repeat over and over, along with a few PSAs per hour. At least that's how Entercom operates WNEW-FM HD-2 in NYC. I listen because I like Smooth Jazz. But since I got a small HD radio for the kitchen, I hear the same programming repeated all the time. I happen to like it, but there's never anything new. When I'm on line in another room, I choose AccuRadio, which has about 20 different Smooth Jazz channels, and they DO get updated.

The Loop as Chicagoans and others knew is gone, even as the music plays until the K-Love takeover on Saturday. The HD2 won't be the same and who knows what happens to 101.1

I will say this - during the past 20 years, WLUP's worst owner far & away was Emmis Communications.

The station was a total disaster under Emmis' ownership. The classic logo was tossed to the curb. Crappy 300 song playlist that hardly ever changed. Imaging voice that belonged in 1997. A revolving door in mornings. Getting defeated in the ratings perennially - often by sizable margins in demo - to an upstart of a station in 97.1 The Drive.

Cumulus at least brought in a decent programmer in Wade Linder.
