WLW Airs Reds Games On 20-Second Delay

Cincinnati Enquirer media columnist John Kiesewetter was one of many who noticed something different about the Reds' radio coverage on Monday during their Opening Day broadcast - a delay of as much as twenty seconds, compared to the action on the field and the TV broadcast. According to WLW sports operations director Dave Armbruster:

"[T]he processing and compressing the signal for digital high-definition broadcast caused the longer than usual delay this year."

Kiesewetter reports that the delay will be reverted to the usual ten-second delay, perhaps as soon as this weekend.

Would be nice if WLW just turned off the HD. The hiss in the analog signal is very annoying.

So that is what that is! I figured I was getting some sort of drift in my tuning and can often get rid of it by re-tuning.

Could that also be why I sometimes have the sound level click and drop very low where I again have to retune and get it back to normal level? It does not happen all the time but happens fairly often.

In an age where so much can be done, I find it hard to believe the delay which is used to screen on-the-air telephone calls can not be turned off for the broadcast of live events like sports events. Remember when the promotion was used to turn down the set on your TV and listen to the radio or take your radio to the game? That is most difficult if not impossible with such a delay.

This isn't just on Reds' broadcasts or on WLW. I've noticed it for several years on WONE in Dayton when they carry the Cleveland Browns games.

Interestingly, WTAM 1100 in Cleveland's cavs coverage has absolutely no delay. I was at the Q a couple weeks ago and they were right with the action on the court. May be they can conference since they are owned by the same people? Naaaaaaa! That'd make waaaaaaay too much sense.

Same with the Bengals. I would rather listen to Brad and Lap than the guys doing the TV game but the delay is a PITA.

I thought it was interesting that Armbruster called it "high-definition." I thought it was "hybrid digital."

Okay, I looked it up. According to the HD Radio Alliance "HD" doesn't stand for anything, not even hybrid digital. It's just a name.

the required delay in the HD/Analog signal is a function of allowing the radio to sync up without a skip if the modes change. In reality the delay is nowhere 20 seconds.

If there are delays built in at the park, and another at the studio, and some more in processing, it is possible to get 16 seconds of delay. The way things are in radio these days, nobody can risk a 375K fine for one of the 7 words or other prohibited references the FCC has discouraged. a couple of fans in range of a parabolic mic.... ooops!

He has TWO balls on him!

Post Janet Jackson and IBOC there will never again be a synch of a radio play by play and TV video, especially when you factor in the delays on the TV side 7 seconds in the trailer, the uplink, downlink, processing at the studio, 7 seconds more after that, then more delay out to the transmitter, and in the transmitter.

Better than one ball and one strike, or no balls and two strikes.

Feel free to add the old Dick Biondi joke here...but make sure you are
in language delay if you're on the air. ;D

In terms of WLW, the questionable language going out over the air is usually that of the people behind the microphone and the choice of topics talked about. It seems the only way to prevent hearing that is to change the station - which I find myself doing more often than not. I'm not not referring to sports play-by-play here, but other programs on the station.

You sound a bit sensitive. Probably a good idea that you don't listen if that bothers you that much.

I didn't realize the Biondi joke really happened...I thought it was just part of radio lore.

Let's just say too much of what goes out over the air there is not in keeping with what made WLW famous. This is from someone who has been involved with radio for over 45 years and has also done an extensive study of that station's history. I'm not saying this to boast, but rather to point out what my opinion is based on.

A lot of things in life are not what they used to be and that is a mixed bag of good and bad.

I happen to enjoy it and what little I know of this business I must not be alone.

Someday I suspect someone will look back on this era and say current radio is not living up to the legacy left by this era's on air personalities.

Just pause the TIVO for 20 seconds.

(Although locally I've never had more than 4 seconds at most between the radio delay and the normal satellite delay.)

If I listen on XM (which I do for all Reds home games) I have to pause the HD TV feed about 13 seconds. When the Reds are on the road I usually have to try and get 700 WLW since here in Louisville, KY the Reds are on a p**s ant 1000 watt AM station with no signal and they get bumped for stupid crap like the horse racing network or ESPN national talk radio. Like anybody gives a crap about either of those things. ::) I will never understand why such a large city with a huge fanbase for the Reds can't get them on a decent station. Ridiculous.

Wish all clear channel am's would do what WLS did...Turn off the I-BUZZ all together and now full time stereo!
So I'm not the only one who noticed that WLS sounds good again! I was tipped off when I was hearing 880 from Columbus within 75 miles of Chicago about a month ago.
