WLW is running IBOC

Now that WLW is broadcasting in HD, I'm going to buy an HD radio.
Edited by Len14043 on 03/18/06 08:08 PM.

A crazy thought... (Re: WLW is running IBOC)

Just a crazy thought from a sleep-deprived draft horse's mind in a human body:

If iBiquity wants to promote HD radio (and AM HD in particular) in a really big way, they and WLW ought to push for authorization to fire up WLW's old 500,000 watt RCA 1 transmitter, with it suitably outfitted for AM HD operation.

Hell, the way things are today, they could probaby even apply for a temporary experimental license to try it and cite "homeland security" or some such argument to "ensure robust reception to keep the nation informed in times of emergency."

With that kind of continental coverage (WLW sometimes even took telephoned-in song requests from *England* in their 500 kW glory days), everyone in the US could listen to AM HD. -- Jason

Yes and their signal in Indianapolis suffers from it...I now listen to them on XM cause the IBUZ on AM is so bad. It's a shame what IBOC does to the analog signal in the outlying areas.

Today...driving my daughter's Grand Cherokee. All the indy stations with HD on AM sound bad...WLW seems to have lost it's low end, and there seems to be a hiss. I really notice the difference when I start listening to WXNT in Indianapolis which is analog only, and used to be the worst sounding station on the dial...it is now one of the best vs WNDE WIBC and now WLW. I wasn't sure it was due to IBUZ but I was wondering. I will check tonight to see if WLW sounds better, as I assume they turn it off at sunset (what a great system)

I've read before that the grand cherokee radios were extra wide bw.
They apparently sound worse with AM IBOC than the standard low hiss on "normal" wide radios like my 94 ford radio.

I drove around tonight, and hiss is gone. Assume it is due to the IBOC unit being off. Sounded fine..a little skywave interference but that is all.

You are elected to go out and persuade all the station managers on 690, 700, 710, and maybe 680 and 720, why this would be such a great idea!
______________

Too bad its not still December, but maybe we can still tell. Now that the big class A's on 700 710, and 720 all have IBUZ, I wonder if people would listen just before sundown in between areas like W. PA, or middle IN see how bad if any these stations trash each other. I would be curious to know.

I never said it would be a good idea for anyone else but WLW and iBiquity. :) -- Jason

If you look hard enough, you will find examples of interference.

For people that are against IBOC and pray for its early demise, I'm sure you will be able to find examples of interference. Because of the vaugaries of skywave reception, WLW, WOR and WGN occasionally have a difficult time in Western PA without IBOC. But I'm sure that wouldn't matter to the anti-IBOC people.
