WLW joins XM

This move by XM doesn't make much sense, unless it's because CC owns a chunk of their stock (internal politics?). Maybe they are trying to bolster their talk programming. WLW has some very strong personalities, but they are heavy on the local topics. Plus, it sounds like XM is putting the station on whole hog, except for the live sports events. Cincinnati news, traffic, sports and weather, plus the local spots, won't appeal to a nationwide audience. XM might be planning to run alternate programming during the news and stop sets, but that would be a logistical nightmare on the XM side.

Not really, all WLW would have to do is send closuers or tones, not a big deal. I used to send tones to Sirius and XM.
Edited by bogart on 02/27/06 06:49 AM.

CC doesn't have any financial stake in XM anymore.

WLW will not change its programming focus because of the XM deal.

XM also has other local oriented morning shows on its "Xtreme talk" channel.

Also Clear Channel may have sold its shares of XM though it still programs a few of the XM channels.

Most importantly I'll now be able to listen to Willie without buying the new XM boombox at work.

I think that is great. I work in Dayton and WLW doesn't always come in clear in the office, but I have no problems picking up XM. Guess I'll take my old radio home.

I'll let you know what they run during the news and sports.

Here in Atlanta, I pick it up on the way to work on an early shift and on the way home on the late shift. I can also sit out on my deck sometimes in the early evening and get sports talk on my boombox.

This deal with XM has officially sold me on satellite radio. Between this and loving the '90s on 9' on my Directv, XM seems like an outstanding deal to me - so good that on Thursday when I am off work I am going out to buy it.

This is really good for Cincinnatian's who don't live in Cincinnati anymore but still wish they did. It's a nice piece of home!

Take care all,
-dave in atlanta.

I'd hope they'd just run the full package. They might not be able to run the spots. That also makes the American Trucker Radio Network simulcast on 2 XM channels.

What could be interesting is what they will do when Reds/Bengals programming is blacked out. Reds of course will be on XM anyway but Bengals won't be. Could Scott Sloan do an XM only show?

I'm getting this feeling too. I wonder if WLW wants to return to the days when they were nationwide on 500,000 watts, and just be a radio superstation like TBS or WGN.

Sure, but why would he want to unless XM is going to fork over some jack, which I doubt, or CC makes him do it.

On the other hand would WLW want WLW originated programming in place of Reds/Bengals/UC games? Say Burbank best ofs or something like that, that is also pretty easy to do, one local feed and one XM feed.

I am stoked about this news...even though i live in Columbus Ohio...i work downtown and dont get decent WLW reception in my office, now i can listen to McConnell and Willie during the workday (The Stooge Reports between Willie and Seg Dennison are priceless). The only regret i do have is now i probably will lose touch listening to Tony Bruno, Tony Snow and Tony Kornheieser (jeez, i didnt realize my listening day consisted of all Tonys)...wait, there is Steve Czaban...oh well, Im still glad xm has made this addition...

For three weeks only - from http://www.xmradio.com/lineup/index.jsp

Please note: America's Truckin' Network with Steve Sommers will now be available on WLW - XM 173. This show will no longer be available on Open Road - XM 171, as of March 20, 2006.

UC games will still be part of the coverage...not only that but this will give XM a NASCAR connection with the Tide Racing Report after NASCAR moves to Sirius.

Wow, UC stays on WLW on XM. I don't know the particulars but Sirius has deals with teams and XM with conferences. UC on XM on WLW surprises me because that's a team deal on a station that has a deal with XM, not team and XM deal and not a conference deal. I've been away from the SSR game for about a year now and have not really kept up on the goings on so things may have changed as far as exclusivity....but again, Wow.

The only conflict that I could see as far as exclusive rights would be if Sirius had a deal with the Big East Conference, which I don't believe they do. The teams deal would still be with WLW though just as Bearcat games are streamed there would really be no difference with XM. UC has everything to gain though in the deal and I could see no objections on their part, though I guess Nancy Z could have a different perspective.

Doubt it. The bread and butter (and ad revenue)is still in Cincinnati. I'm confident they'll still be talking about the local bufoon politicians, when applicable. They pulled Burbank out of syndication because ratings dropped due to elimionating the local humor and content. The Marge Schott thing hit, the rest of the country didn't get it, so all that humor had to be passed on.

Quite possible..thougth that would make Sloan less available for fill-ins during the day. Maybe more Boshears on XM only.

Will local commercials run on the XM feed, or will it be the equivalent of the WLW webstream?

No, there is not a Big East-Sirius deal, they do have some deals with teams in the Big East though. Yea, its a great deal for UC, a national broadcast platform for all games at no extra cost. You never know with Nancy.
Edited by bogart on 03/01/06 02:00 AM.
