WLW Signal Question

For the longest time, whenever I travel on I-275 between I-75 and SR-32, I hear a fluttering in the audio of WLW. What is this? My only guess is the God awful IBOC. IBOC ruins the audio of an AM station on a non-HD receiver. What a waste.

That's the IBOC effect. The loss of fidelity on analog makes WLW's signal sound like an old shortwave station. I have to say, shortwave sounded better.

IBOC is little more than an experiment to see how far you can reduce the frequency response of an AM signal until the ratings begin to suffer. Apparently, that figure is equal to or less than 5khz.

I left the area some years ago, so i don't know where all the transmitters are today, but perhaps you're driving near another Am transmitter site when that happens. i've found some car radios fade when there's a transmitter site nearby on whatever freq you're listening to, part from the one being used on the nearby stick.

IBOC won't cause flutter. However you could be experiencing reflection from the buildings in Cincinnati. WLW's signal coming from the north in Mason could be reflecting back from the buildings to your receiver causing the flutter since your location in that area is between 0 and 90* relative to WLW's reflected signal off the buildings in town. Does it do it any where else on 275?

I think this is correct. If you look at the coverage map it lines up perfectly.

I don't think I get the flutter south of SR 32 on I-275, BUT I will pay close attention on my way to church tonight.
