WLW Uses Tony LaRussa's Shingles As Contest Tie-In

This one might have topped that classic "The Big Juan" billboard promotion...

With Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa not with the team in Cincinnati this weekend, Reds radio flagship WLW is running spots giving listeners "a shot to win Tony La Russa shingles courtesy of Ray St. Clair Roofing!" Needless to say, the Redbirds are not amused. But you know it hit a nerve when the Reds have to step in and voice their displeasure.

Only in Cincinnati would a so called News talk station do these kinds of stunts. It's nothing new, and better suited for a FM morning show.

WLW knew exactly what they were doing when they did this promotion, and it was to get people talking about ... WLW.

Positive or negative, it worked.

I'd call this a big double-edged sword for WLW. And, as Columbo would say, it does seen ironic if both the Cardinals and Reds would be extremely unhappy about what happened, considering that their rivalry has heated up in recent months.

Tacky. Idiotic. Stupid. Whomever approved this spot should be fired immediately. I quit listening to WLW years ago, and stuff like this is why.

First thing I thought about after reading the article online yesterday was that someone on the Cincinnati Radio-Info Discussion Board would defend the stunt by making a comment like this. It's becoming as predictable as WLW itself pulling these tasteless and idiotic stunts. Don't get me wrong. I think WLW is a lot more fun to listen to than the stodgy, stuffy sounding WGN's, WJR's, and KDKA's of the news-talk world. But they don't need to go this far just to get people talking about them. It's become a really tired tactic. They have enough going for them without having to resort to this type of stuff. Instead of moronic promotions like this they should expend their creative energies more on improving the terrible afternoon drive show and the overall quality of the callers.

And nobody has brought up Ray St. Clair Roofing. What genius there thought this was a good idea? I'll never do business with them. Kudos to Reds owner Bob Castellini for speaking out against this stunt and for publicly scolding the juveniles at WLW.

Speaking of medical conditions, it appears that some anonymous doctor has removed the sense of humor from some of this boards illustrious posters! This is a great stunt! If you don't like WLW there's a really big knob on your radio that will actually allow you to tune in to other stations, so use it! This is what WLW does for a living and it's VERY successful. Darryl Parks explained how it all works on his Saturday morning show. This kind of stuff is what keeps me and thousands of other listeners LISTENING! Kudos to WLW and to Ray St. Clair roofing for having the "hangy-down things" to entertain us all! And yes I've had chicken pox so if Karma decides to hit me up with shingles someday, so be it.

The only reason WLW is successful is due to their signal and heritage. The truth is, their listener ship is ageing with nothing new brought to the table creatively. You miss a day, it doesn't matter as it's the same everyday. Boring lame stunts and programming. Turn the knob to the off position.

So; if a manager of another team gets sick with a different disease, is WLW going to do the same thing?

Truly Poor Taste.

On a related note; I find it hard to believe that WLW is still running their "Win a Cruise with a Chevy Cruze" car competition. Did they not see that GM just recalled ALL of the Cruzes that have been made thus far due to a transmission issue What's the point in running a car competition when the car that you are trying to win has been recalled by the manufacturer? ??? :-\

It would also appear that the doctor has removed from some posters any sense of decency and respect. And your tired suggestion, with exclamation point! no less, to use the tune-out knob is as predictable as WLW's tasteless stunts and the inevitable comments here that they are meant to get people talking.

I didn't defend anything, you're putting words in my mouth. I was merely pointing out that WLW has always done what WLW does. And that is to get people talking about them.

It's radio, not rocket science.

This is RADIO. It's SERIOUS BUSINESS. NO SENSE OF HUMOR IS ALLOWED. EVER.

Quality or taste of the promotion aside, the troubling part to me is that the Reds think they have a right to pre-approve a promotion on the station that does not directly involve them. Hopefully WLW can straighten them out before they get as powerful as the Bengals and can dictate who is on or not on the air outide the games.

I understand they are associated with the station 24 hour a day, but their input should be predominantly restricted to time frame of the games.

WLW has been the flagship station for the Reds since 1948. I am sure that there are stipulations about what can and cannot be done on the air for the Reds through their contracts, etc.

You go TANK, you're 100% right. This was a promotion that would have made Randy Michaels proud! For those of you who are "apalled" by such outlandish behavior...go listen to something that's voicetracked. BTW, the Reds swept the Cardinals this weekend ;D

Don't give WLW any ideas... All we need is a Pittsburgh Steelers player's child or something (WLW also carries some Bengals games) coming down with chicken pox, only to give away free Kroger chickens at the kid's expense! ::)
