WLW's Gary Burbank to retire

As Redsfan noted, Gary was funny in the mid 80's........or maybe he was just a fresh act.

I remember his morning show as so, so. But he shined in the afternoon. I live near Col's and I remember him being the talk of the town. I was at a pizza shop and the whole place was talking Gary Burbank. I even had a copy of the article where they gave him the 10 year contract on my office bulletin board I was such a fan.

Bu I quit listening regularly after Doc left. Probably in the early 90's. Syndication just simply watered him down more. I probably haven't listened to the show since more than a dozen times in the 2000's.

Master, I'm a lifer - as you put it - and I agree with YOU. Burbank is a legend in this market and is very funny & talented. However he's more comfortable a listen than an entertaining one. I would say that in your native city, Steve Dahl is the same. Not funny anymore and just there on WCKG because nobody at CBS has a better solution for that time slot. Angry Guys are over too. Just not a fun novelty like they were on WBOB back in the day. That act hasn't refined itself enough to be listenable. A perfect sports station in this town would have McAllister in middays and Furman in the afternoon. Mornings? I don't know.

steve dahl makes perfect sense, and i'm ashamed for not making that link myself! steve dahl is the audio equal to watching pait dry. he was never the same without garry. yet WCKG keeps him on-air for whatever reason (though over on the chicago board more than a few people have made the suggestion to put mancow BACK in chicago in the mornings, music in the mid-day, and dahl on the drive - makes sense to me.) i just think it's a good thing that cincy is getting shaken up. this is a city that is spoken of in the past tense too much. i've yet to meet and talk with a baby boomer who refers to cincy in the present tense, and that's sad. it extends to radio, and having this kind of shake up is good. the 2AGs are fill-in material. they're an interesting - not funny... or entertaining - skit on a weekend show. jerry and craig were cartoons of what a velvet-jacket-wearing over-the-top jock and an NPR reject would sound like on-air. cincy needs a good shake up, even if CC is doing the shaking.

wow... just this morning i wondering if any more of my radio wishes would come true this year and here we have it! yay! nothing personal, and i've only lived in the area for about 4 years, but that stuff is not funny, entertaining, or even remotely relevant in any way, shape or form. then add yet another cincinnati high pitched voice in "duke" and you have a double-whammy of crappola.

my first hope, for what it's worth, was that jerry and craig would go away. done. then i hoped that lance would get a competetor - furman arives. horray. and that was a win-win because it dismanted half of my other wish, that the 2AGs would go away. now we're left with "skinny," whom remains one of my last wishes to go away. the final wish is that lance be moved to a mid-day or night spot where he belongs. flipping between him and furman is a lesson in how that format should (furman) and should not (lance) be conducted.

but back to gary - best wishes to him in retirement. he seems like a nice enough guy, but his time is passed.

Did you get rejected from Clear Channel or something? Seems like you have alot of angst towards CC employees. Who really cares if someone's voice is as you put it high pitched? Not everyone is going to sound like Barry White or James Earl Jones. Also how is Duke's voice high pitched? Its lets see a natural voice. 2 Angry Guys were very entertaining. You just don't get it.

Burbank is very good and even today is entertaining.

my relationship (past or previous) is of no consequence. i'm a stickler for quality radio, and cincy is rather polarizing on the quality scales. it's either really good or really bad. the afore mentioned guys i have hoped would leave were wishes based on the sore quality of their shows. the high-pitch thing is just something i noted about cincy - there are a lot of locals who have high-pitched natural voices. to name a few: john phillips, "duke" sinatra, larry handley (now does weather on 96.5, richard skinner, lance (when he gets excited or if someone disagrees with him), tom gamble (when he inturrupts himself...constantly), and sloan. it's just odd that so many locals have that fem-voice thing going on. i don't want barry white - i just don't want to try and figure out if it's a guy or woman talking when i tune in. if you're a local (life-timer) you would not understand. as for finding the 2AG's "entertaining" - i now regret spending time to respond at all. if that is entertainment for you, i'm sure you'll be at peace reconing back to the Big Red Machine days for a while to come.

You think John Phillips has a fem voice???? I'd hate to hear what you think of Reno or Jordan on Kiss or Clayton on mornings in Dayton's 94.5, or Ross from the tonight show. Maybe its the women you are hanging out with have deeper voices.

Anyway I'm a local though am well traveled and very aware of radio around the world and I really have had never had a problem telling the sex of a listener, except for a couple of Air America hosts.
