wlxi channel 61 in Greensboro, NC

Just set up an ota antenna. WLXI is now mapping to 43. and their legll ID reflcts that. They are on 61 on dish. That was their origina analog channel. When did they rebrand?

They are on DT-43 for their over the air broadcast. Since 52-69 were taken off after the transition for mobile and telecommunications uses, WLXI cannot use 61 anymore.

But they should still be able to map to 61...

By rule, they're supposed to map to channel 61, their analog channel, however, the FCC seems to be willing to allow some stations to map to their RF channel if their analog channel was 52 or greater. (I'm looking at you, KAIL Fresno.)

I think it's a case of "no harm, no foul"... I've not seen evidence of the FCC actually ruling that it's OK to use the wrong major channel.

But really, the point of having "right" major channels is to ensure major channels are unique -- that you don't have two channel 12's in Winston-Salem, etc...

So as long as there isn't another station using major channel 43 in Greensboro, having WLXI use it really doesn't cause any problems. The Commission doesn't feel an inconsequential violation is worth the effort to prosecute it.

FWIW we have one of these in Nashville -- WJFB, originally analog channel 66, using its RF channel 44 as its major channel.

Another way this can happen.....

is if a station's PSIP generator isn't working. This is the system that adds the virtual channel info in the first place. If this information is missing, many TV sets will synthesize it. They'll use the station's RF channel as the major channel and the program number as the minor channel.

That doesn't appear to be the case with WLXI though, as according to rabbitears.info their lowest program number is 3 but they're using 43.1 and 43.2. That's a solid indication WLXI *is* transmitting PSIP remapping info.

(using program numbers lower than 3 is also technically a violation of the standard, but violations are pretty common.)

WLXI is mapping to 43, it's not lack of PSIP. TCT also did it on WRLM in Ohio, moving it from 67-1 to 47-1.

Hate to bring it up again, but: http://www.rabbitears.info/blog/ind...ghts-on-the-ATSC-Standard-and-Program_Numbers ;)
