WLXN 1440 To Oldies - With 99.9 Simulcast

Is Tom Collins coming back to the land of Hilton? Is a 5000 watt AM so useless that you have to use a 14 watt fm translator over 11 miles away to be the primary way to reach listeners?

They have a permit to upgrade to 250 watts, the maximum for a translator, and relocate closer to Lexington in the process.

It'll be great to see Sandra Hughes again. I'm just wondering why they didn't change WFMY? I guess they missed the window to move now, since there's domain names and translators set up.

Ok, that will indeed make them more competitive than 14 watts in High Point. But its still a sad commentary on the state of AM radio today that you can be more competitive with a very small FM signal than a 5,000/1000 watt AM. It might be time to do away with AM and put them all on translators. What a waste of resources to be broadcasting with 1000, 5000 watts or more with nobody listening. I was in wal-mart yesterday and saw a set of walkie talkies with a claimed range of 20 miles, maybe the AM operators should consider going in that direction. Of course I don't know what Mexican and gospel music would sound like on a walkie-talkie.

Listenable?

I agree with a previous post about doing away with AM and moving them to FM translators, mainly in smaller
and medium markets, in the larger ones, they should utilize HD channels, but since HD radio hasn't taken off,
i'm not sure if it would work, but the AM band is fading, and most listeners would want better quality.

Now let me see if I'm understanding this...oldies on an FM translator is going to do better than it did on a 100k'watter -- owned by the same folks?

That's a great observation. Only wish I had thought of it before you. Of course considering the group planning to put oldies on a translator, it makes perfect sense.

When is this supposed to happen? The article sounded as if it happened Monday morning, but Dennis Miller is on the radio as I type. The KOOL oldies are on WLXN.com, I think it sounds better than what was online before thanks to the personalities.

Well if you look back for years to be truthful, there hasn't been anyone that had an absolute knock down survey or book. I can't remember anyone being in the WCFL/WLS/WABC or eeven BIG APE category. Too many stations, too many bad patterns and too many fickle advertisers!

99.9, really? That frequency should have a nice little fight with 99.7 Kannapolis.
Which is already fighting with WMAG.

I probably won't try this station too often. I like WBRF (when I'm in range) and I like MY oldies station, which is more suited to my musical taste. Unless this is going to sound like WKIX-AM, though most "oldies" stations don't sound that good.

I was told that WLXN has their translator at 99.9 ready to launch soon. Has anybody heard the signal or is it just a flash in the pan?

I can hear 99.9 in north High Point and listened to it Saturday night near 40 and Stratford in Winston-Salem. Can't get it in my house in Kernersville.

I've got a couple of old Collins FM Exciters out in the garage I could hook up and get a better signal than 99.9. Run the tower wire right up on top of the county jail next door!.. At least, I would have a "captive" audience. Bet they have pretty good buying power too!
