WLZT 2nd backup transmitter

I was just browsing around on the FCC site, and looked up WLZT. I see they are licensed on the south side of town, and have their backup apparently on the same tower, then there's also a construction permit for another backup at 35KW, which appears to be on the old 92.3 WCOL tower right beside Greenlawn, yet still licensed to Ashville. Is this old news? Why would they want 2 backups?

Keep 93.3 on air... Having an AUX at another tower site allows them to stay on air even if something happens at the main site. Smart move actually.

The main antenna is on one of the towers in the WTVN array --what used to be the Channel 6 tower and the tower for 96.3.

Given the complexity of a six tower array, nice to be able to run the FM from another site if maintenance is required.

I know QFM used to be on the Obetz tower (aux still there) until the move to the WBNS supertower, but never knew 6 was there too. I thought their old tower was the one on Dodridge?

Channel 6 was on the Obetz tower prior to Dodridge I think.

Wasn't 6 on a Harmon Rd tower once?

The current WSYX Tower is the tower located on Stimmel Rd. This tower also is the home to Fox 28, 88.7 RadioU, 88.3 (CDR's Translator) and 91.5 WHKC.

I know where it's at now. I was just curious about the Obetz location.

WTVN-TV used the original tall tower of the WTVN radio array in Obetz until 1974 or 1975 when they moved to the shared tower on Dodridge St. that had WOSU-FM side mounted below the TV mast. The WTVN-TV studio and office was located at the corner of Harmon & Griggs, which is almost right in front of the WCOL tower, but WTVN-TV did not use that tower or have any transmitting facilities at that site.

I may have my history wrong, but I think WTVN used to stick on top of the Leveque Tower when it was owned by Edward Lamb. I'm not sure if the tv moved immediately on the Taft acquisition or if it was done after Taft bought WTVN AM.

On a tangent here, but at that time, the previous owners of WTVN AM (WHKC) had turned their FM license back in I believe in 1951. 3FMs went dark during that period. WELD (WBNS FM), WHKC FM and WLWF. WRFD had a CP for an FM that as far as I can tell made it on the air, but it never made it to full license.

So no FM existed at the 610 site at that time. FM was not part of the equation again until I believe 1959.

Sorry: Too much caffeine.
