WMAC and the Braves

Cumulus moved the Braves games over to 105.5 WROK several years ago, when that station was still sports WIFN (105-5 the Fan). When I was programming The Fan, we took spillover games from WMAC if they had a conflict with UGA football, and we would even take the weekday afternoon games because 940 didn't want to pre-empt Rush and/or Hannity.

The Bravos went to 105.5 fulltime in 2008, and stayed with that frequency fulltime even after their format switch to Rock in 2009.

Any reason why they didn't put them back on 940?

I'm out of the market now, but it occurs to me that the Braves may be the only thing keeping WROK afloat. Their ratings (at least based on 12+ numbers) have never gone anywhere since the launch of the station. That's not a function of signal (105.5 has one of the best signals in the market, especially with a transmitter output of 6.1kw, but it's on the big hill on Hwy 49 where WDEN [105.3] used to be). It's purely a function of format. The Fan's sports programming from 2005-2009 was pulling pretty respectable numbers. Even after dropping all local programming (Bill Shanks' afternoon show was getting a pretty good audience, but they had to actually PAY him to do it, and that just wouldn't do) and becoming strictly an ESPN-driven station, the numbers weren't horrible. Heck, even the oldies programming on that frequency from 2001-2005 was respectable. As for the current format, what is it, exactly? Triple-A? Classic? Modern? Active? Depends on the time of day.

It might also have something to do with keeping the Braves on a decent signal, since Cumulus and Dickey Broadcasting have the rights to the Braves Radio Network. WMAC's signal (particularly the 10kw nighttime directional) is atrocious, dating back a few years to when they "refurbished" the antenna system on Forsyth Road. Although I'm not an RF guy by any stretch, I'm not sure that job was done properly.

So you go from a format that pulls decent numbers to a format that needs a baseball team to keep it going. What consultant was responsible for this?

the daytime signal has problems, too. I was thinking it was the piece of crap radio in the truck I'm driving.
