WMAQ Oldies 670???

C

Guest
I have an idea, and I am sorry if someone already suggested this.

I wonder if they will blow away WSCR and give us an AM oldies station. Could you imagine the WMAQ calls coming back as Chicago's full-powered oldies station on 670?

Is the Score performing well enough to dodge Infinity's bullet?

WSCR is billing $18 million to WLS's $21 million. WSCR is not going to be sacrificed for a music format on AM that might bill $3 million to $4 million at best.

Any chance you can post which stations bill what?

I think it would give us all a world of insight!

Thanks.

Replacing a station that bills 20 million with a format that has no track record... priceless!

Re: 2004 billing numbers

If this is accurate, WJMK actually did better than WSCR.

So if WSCR did go oldies, would it do worse than WJMK did by being on an AM signal? The coverage of 670 is so much greater. Much of that old rock and roll was played on AM for years.

Please pardon my ignorance...

Even if they did do that format, it won't be with those calls.

They originated on 670, but NBC owns them and will not allow CBS (a competitor on the TV side) to use them again. They will stay only on WMAQ-TV and WMAQ-DT, unless NBC or GE gets back into the radio biz, which at this point is unlikely.

However, they are still on 670, the transmitter building, in Bloomingdale that is.

An alternative idea...

Since it looks like everyone else is offering their ideas on a new oldies outlet in Chicago, allow me to throw in as well.

Instead of The Score flipping to an AM oldies outlet, what is the possibility of WMVP AM1000 taking on that role. The contract for the White Sox and the Bulls is up for grabs right now.

If The Score were to snatch the rights for the two teams out from under WMVP, there is no chance in hell AM1000 would even bill close to the $9.8 million they are now. There would be no reason for them to remain a sports station, really.

The call letters for WCFL are currently being used by a contemporary Christian station in Morris, IL. They might be willing to relinquish them for a price. Bringing back "Super 'CFL" seems just as plausible as bringing back "MusicRadio WLS".

If WMVP were to lose the Sox and Bulls, the only other alternative I see is for them to set up a liberal/moderate talk station, to counter their more conservative WLS, much like they do in San Francisco.

Comments?

Re: 2004 billing numbers

Wscr won't be changing anytime soon: they're trying to get the White Sox & Bulls deals from Wmvp right now, so until that matter is settled both stations - Wscr & Wmvp - are in limbo.

Once call letters are released, they do not "belong" to anyone.

No, that is incorrect. From the FCC website:

If the request is for a secondary call sign (e.g., WXXX-FM) whose primary call sign (e.g., WXXX) is in use by another holder, the applicant must first obtain consent to use the secondary call sign from the holder of the primary call sign.
