WMAV/Oxford now in HD

Noticed while driving around Memphis that PRM's WMAV/Oxford has HD on.

I am betting this just happened. The calls don't pop up when the signal locks (it just shows "HD-1"), and, although there is an HD-2, there is nothing on it yet. And, it just displayes "HD-2" along with silence. Further, the HD Radio site doesn't list WMAV.

I am getting a decent signal on 89.5 today, and no HD noticed there, but, it could be that the signal is not quite good enough to get HD across the state line.

I assume this means PRM is lighting up HD across the state?

DE and all: I visited the site today at the invitation of Bob Buie, Their CE. Not all
audio feeds have been connected yet, and final adjustments are still being made. All the PRM stations are converting using Continental xmtrs and Nautel HD exciters
Pretty amazing stuff, and the cost $$$$. IMHO there will have to be LOTS more receivers before smaller operators will consider this. They will have HD 1, 2, 3 all running shortly. JBI

I agree with you, Mr. Ingram. I suspect the only people who have heard them in HD are the engineers, AND ME.

And, yeah... if I were running a C2 in Batesville, MS, there are a million things I would spend money on before going HD. And, spend money for an AM HD? I can't see ever doing that.

Bobby's a good engineer. He did our work when I was an OM in Jackson. Dude didn't like me too much, though. I think he saw me as a snotty, underaged know-it-all. Gosh, was that 19 years ago?!

yes sir. your tax dollars at work.what processing were they running?Yep it will be awhile before small broadcasters can bite that huge bullet.

They are running Orban Digital something or other. Paul Burt gave me the guided tour thru the plant ( He's the RDS Guru for Louisiana...thanks , Paul)! Quite a sight. JBI

probably the 6200.The HD prices should come down as in most electronics so the average broadcaster can afford it.May be awhile, though. But i sure agree with your statement about enough HD receivers in the market place.I'm still not convinced this thing will be that successful.thank you sir

An update to my previous post...

As I checked on the way to pick up a pizza at 7pm, WMAV has apparently completed more work. The digital ID now is operational on both the HD-1 and HD-2 channels, and an audio stream is now up on the HD-2 side.

As required by FCC regs, the HD-1 stream is a simulcast of the analog. HD-2 seems to be classical (which sounds great in HD. Classical really needs a lot of dynamic range).

HD signal drops out a bit here in Germantown. I live just outside the 60 dBu (1 mV/m) contour.

There was a mention in one of the recent Radio World issues for their choice and purchase of those HD Transmitters.

DE how well does WMAV do in HD up here? The translator over the bridge isn't doing them any favors in Midtown these days. Just when I got rid of the overload from of WYPL.

Fortunately I have a large collection of HOS eppisodes to keep me happy.

I have a JVC KD-HDR1 in my older vehicle, the one I use for transporting children, horse tack, and garden supplies from Home Depot. The JVC retails for about $200, with installation included. Not bad.

The results on local AM vary. I live in Germantown, a good distance from both WDIA and WREC. On 'DIA, the signal works OK, with drop outs under power lines, with lightning crashes, etc. When they play music, the difference in audio is striking. WREC does not seem to hold as well as WDIA. I get drop-outs much of the time. In fact, I have disabled the HD a time, or two.

Your mileage, of course, may vary.

Oooh, Germantown. I guess AM HD is out of the question in Oxford, then?

I'd like to note that WMAV's audio is balanced again, thankfully. I was getting tired of adjusting the balance in my car when I flipped from WMAO to them. ::)
