Last I knew (and this was many years ago) Clear Channel bought the signal and shut it off so their 740 could go further. May be true, my be BS, but that's what I was told. The tower went down during 2001 when a hurricane came through. Not sure what one it was. The big one that flooded everything inland.

wasn't that the station with office on the main drag between the bridge to atlantic beach and morehead city ???????

every time i drove by i was looking for some drunk to have driven thru it...

WMBL'S Tower was taken down by the State Port Ath. The land was purchased for the Avaition fuel terminal to add storage space on Radio Island. The old studio with the glass bricks was demolished. The only thing that I know is still there is the base of the tower and maybe a few ground radials. The tower was in bad shape. (they fell it). We put together a few pieces of it and it is still being used at several fire departments down east. WBMA tower was taken down and the building demolished. That tower wasn't that old, the original tower had a guy wire to break and caused a "list". This was not repairable and a new tower was built. No longer are the sounds of Ray Cummins and Hilda on the air with probably some of the most entertaining radio in the market. That radio died 20 years or so ago.

I was lucky enough to get a piece of WMBL's tower. I worked there from 1974 to 1976. A little bit of trivia, that was WMBL's second tower. The first one lasted one year 1947 to 1948 and came down in an ice storm. You could still see the base of the original tower about 5 feet north of the second tower on Radio Island
