WMC 79

Re: WMC 79/The Mighty 790

No flip; no details.

Odd. I would have thought the flip would happen by midnight 12/31. It made sense that contacts would expire at that time.

But, apparently not.

Still poorly-executed sports at 5:30a Monday.

Nothing worse then a poor launch! I think I'll call them to see if their looking for a PD.

It will happen tomorrow. Did you really expect them to flip over the weekend and interrupt all their paid programming? And did you really expect anyone in management to complicate their holiday by changing formats? C'mon, we know 1960 Union better than that! It's all about convenience and this is just another prime example.

Now that 2006 is here, who's next to flip? A Flinn station? Or will it be a big dog in the market? Should be fun to watch.

Happy New Year!

Exactly. I can't even check the PO Box or make a FedEx shipment today. Tomorrow at 6AM or maybe Noon is my guess.

I listened last night at midnight... didn't happen. Listened today at 6 AM and Noon... didn't happen. Was kind of thinking that it might happen after the Tigers-Texas game today. I was driving back home from Tunica by then.

They are already disadvantaged being on AM... they could at least create some publicity for the launch besides pumping their TV station.

Re: WMC 79/The Mighty 790

I agree! I've been doing this a long time. Bad launch equals bad radio station. That's BS that it couldn't be done today and wasn't because of the legal holiday. Perfect time to do it! Website better be finished for the launch, and the old site should be linked to the new site.

Who's in charge at this station? Barney Fife? I've got two small AM's hours away from Memphis who both had better launches into the same format.

How disappointing!

Yeah, the Tigers post game show ended, and before the theme music faded there you were in the middle of someone's phone call to Fox Sports. No transition at all. That was the pefect time to flip...Memphis lost today.

Tell me, exactly what part of the public is actually gonna care when they launch? Do you think anyone besides radio folks are glued to their radio, waiting for the first country song?

Format launches are for the competition, not the listeners.

It's fun to waft on about the good old WMC days isn't it? Aunt Eloise, Phil Conner, Les Acree, Bill Dotson, etc.

But I think the cold hard reality is that Infinity is making a format flip simply because of economics and might bring a morning show to the dial, but not much of anything else.

If they were not making any money with sports, then the move is purely about money and money they won't commit to any type of talent.

The launch time is for convenience, not for any redeeming programming quality.
What do you think, KIX is worried?

Besides there are two remaining sports stations, and probably that's one too many for Memphis.

Re: WMC 79 -- Now Country

Bland satt. country. I would have rather heard WRN's version. But with 830 Cotton Country so close, it probably wouldn't work.

There's a right way and wrong way to do satt. country. Lets see how they make it sound. Better then nothing, I guess.

Thanks for the update. How are they imaging it?

"The Country you know and love, on Country Legends, WMC 79"

Then a second of dead air...then Roy Orbison at this second.

Re: WMC 79 -- Now Country

They have a horrible audio issue. It just keeps dropping out completely, for half-second, or so. Very annoying. It happened maybe a dozen times or so during "Southern Nights" alone.

Frankly, that's the stuff that should have been addressed before launch.

Oh well, back to Sirius...

Re: WMC 79 -- Now Country

Sounds like the satt. is not lined up right. This is Infinity? They have the jump from the old website to the new website. However the new one is not online. How pathetic. Your right most listeners don't care about this launch, but those listening right now, are hearing garbage. And while they sample, they travel to the website to find out more. And they get nothing but a logo.

Re: WMC 79 -- Now Country

> Sounds like the satt. is not lined up right

Yup. Could well be digital cliff effect. I dunno.

Hopefully, they can work the bugs out.

Oh, was listening while on the Stairmaster. 8:30-8:45 was so junked up with news, etc., and network spots (lots and lots of 'em) they only had one -- yes one -- song in the quarter hour. Yikes.

Oh, and I really enjoyed the Sports radio promo they ran, telling us how their sports talk isn't your Grandpa's sports talk. I'm thinking the old sports imaging should be off by now. But, that's just me. What's a lawyer know?

OK, enough comment from me. I really don't like being negative on here, and I have little positive to say. I wish them great success.

I'm a positive guy as well, but they can't be happy with this morning's debut. This may well go down as one of the best blown opportunities of 2006.

They COULD have had a local staff in place, all of the imaging right, the web page up and complete, and made sure all the technical glitches were worked out before air time.

If it's an all sat format, then 94 (or someone else) could kill them with one punch. They've got until PM drive to fix it. Any bets?

They don't care. It's an AM station in a mid-size market they're not even sure they still want to be in anymore. They'd be better off just surrendering the license. They've had weeks, at least, to get all this worked out, what excuse could there possibly be to launch with all the glitches, and what self-respecting human being would do it if they cared? I'm embarrassed to admit that I've spent what little time I have listening to it to this point. They could've done so much with this--taking advantage of the heritage, etc.--but nothing. Can you imagine the fallout there would've been from sometihng like this back in the day? Today though, nobody cares--we've probably spent more time listening to it than the GM, if he's listened to it at all.

This is pathetic on many levels ... I'll just cover a few:

The on-air sound is AWFUL. Whether it's the satellite alignment or what, WMC ultimately is the gatekeeper of what goes on the air, and it sounds like dog poop.

As with many satellite situations, voice-over-voice is heard all the time, and it's just unacceptable.

I'm no fan of voice tracking, but I would rather hear local voices making local references instead of some washed-up puker on the dish reading silly-ass one liners from Denver.

It all comes back to the two words that have plagued WMC for nearly a decade: lethargic management.
