WMC-TV's analog "sign off"

Well....

The folks over on Union paid tribute to 50+ years of analog broadcasting by simply shutting the carrier off afther the 11:59 spot break without so much as an ID.

Nice.

I could only get it on cable, and it was the digital staion, but they stopped running the trailer after the ad break. I really didn't even see a blip during the changeover. Was anything even mentioned about WMC's history on the news at 10? I had to work late tonight, so I missed it.

That's a shame, really. They were, after all, the first TV station in Memphis (though, on channel 4).

As an aside... assuming anyone is watching over the air, I am now convinced that being the only low-bander will be an issue. When I got up this morning, I checked out the new signal. While the others are fine on rabbit ears, 5 was freezing -- a LOT, even on the attic antenna. I ended up cutting a loop out of #12, which seems to be working quite well, but how many folks would actually do that?

Let's see how 13 does as our only high-bander (better, I'm sure).

Channel 3 did a nice job, showing the engineer actually pushing the button...

Interestingly, when they signed off, another channel 3 came up behind them. The band is open, being mid-June.

NC in on 2; but the 3 faded out. I don't know who it was...

Identified one of them... WSAV-TV Savannah. Now, watching a CBS affiliate in color.

Bizarre to have WREG go off during a band opening...

My cable system in Ripley just showed "No Signal" for a while on 3 and 5. About an hour later, channel 5's picture was freezing up a lot. I went to bed after that. It's "New Wave" here, and I know they were struggling to meet the digital deadline on the channels under 100 the first time. 100 and over have looked great all along on my HDTV. Haven't looked at anything today. I thought the going blank was weird. Not what I ecpected at all.

Why would they "pay tribute" to their 50 years of analog broadcasts? They are still broadcasting the station. They just aren't broadcasting to the folks who weren't smart enough to get a box before the deadline.

As of 3pm, it seems there are only two analog full-powers left in West TN...

24 went off during the night, I'm told. WBBJ-7 is down. 13 will stay on as analog until midnight.

It was strange watching CBS's Price is Right on channel 3 today. But, the channel 3 wasn't here -- it was Norfolk, VA. Stereo and color, too. Of course, for all I know, that station has now gone dark, too.

I am having a tough time in Midtown with 13 & 5. An outside antenna is not an option for me. Of the 2, I am having more trouble with 13 and that is the opposite of what I expected.
