Job posted on allaccess for a fulltime control room operator position. Indicates that shift is overnights, holidays and weekends. Post doesn't mention compensation level. Any realistic ideas?

If you're looking to get into the business, and get some experience with modern automation equipment this is probably a good opportunity.

Remember, Salem is a non-union broadcasting organization that apparently doesn't even subscribe to ratings services, but it is a marginally profitable company because it keeps its "costs" very low.

Last I heard, the salary level was closer to working the cash register at McDonalds or stocking shelves at Wal-mart than it was to anything an experienced broadcast professional might expect. If you don't have a mortgage to pay, or still live at home with your parents, you might be able to "survive" but it's probably not a living wage for most experienced professional people, although things may have changed.

That said, they are nice people and it might be the perfect spot for somebody who really needs a job now, or who wants to get a foot in the door of the business. It's just that Salem does business a different way than the bigger competitive broadcasters do, and just like working at John's Bargain Store wasn't like working at a classy Fifth Avenue Department store, compensation at Salem usually isn't anything like compensation at CBS or even Cumulus.

All of that said, if you are in the job market it is probably worth giving them a call to find out for yourself. They are nice people, and can use good help.

And to be involved with a station under Phil Boyce's watch (given his past success at WABC) is worth the price of admission, IMHO.

Time: Thanks for the insight about Salem. Unfortunately, I am an out of work professional looking for an entry point somewhere. Your perspective helps me (and probably others) to move along to something else. Thank you.

This is the kind of job you would want do do very well at just to get a sweet letter of recomendation from a(n) NYC radio station.
In other words, forget the amount of compensation, get the job, and DON'T SCREW UP!
