Its great to have a European language station on the air, reminded me of years ago, when all immigrants from Europe had something to listen to in their native language. Last night during a violent thunder storm, I was shocked to pick up a Jewish full time station on 107.9. It took me time to ID it, with it fading in and out but before it disappeared for good, I was able to get the calls and location, Lakewood NJ. How long have they been on the air and how did they get approved. Now it would be nice for other European ethnics such as Italian, German, Greek, Polish, French and others to have their own full time stations, so their children can know about their ancestory, which the radio dial has forgotton about. With all these new LP stations popping up, why not. They can get advertisers in the area they are targeting.

Except for Spanish, we are several generations beyond the point where any of the other European languages are spoken by an, if at all but ultra-seniors. By the 50’s most Italian heritage persons under 50 were third or later generation. Significant German migration ceased in the late 1800’s, about 140 years ago. The others are very small groups today.

And “Jewish” is not a language. Hebrew is not a European language, although Yiddish could be considered one as it is an adaptation of High German, Aramaic and Hebrew.

Lakewood, NJ is a hub of Orthodox Judaism. WMDI-LP is a 100-watt LP FM station that serves the Orthodox population there, which is in the range of at least 60,000-70,000 people, making up around two-thirds of the township's rapidly-growing population. Good use of an LPFM serving its community, it seems.

Lakewood also happens to be home to Kars4Kids and its parent/sister Orthodox religious support charity, Oorah.
