WMDM is Back!

I first heard WMDM as a CHR/top40 in the 80s. They're back again! They've recycled the moniker The ROcket 97.7 but brought back the original calls are an playing todays hits once again.

keep it up All Hit 98!

I helped put that station on the air, back in about 1976, when it was part of the WPTX pair.
Rocky Willis was the manager, Carey Corson and a guy named George were the engineers, Clarence Beverage (nephew of THE Harold Beverage, of antenna fame) was the consultant.
We had "Sunshine Sonny Stephens", "E.K. Bromley", John Griffiths, and a few others as air talent. Not sure how many of those were on air with WMDM.

Some of the construction was a "comedy of errors", as we had to replace the BE audio board with an RCA, since the AM (920 KHz) RF was killing the less-shielded BE. Trouble was, the RCA board was deeper than the desk top, so it hung out over the edge.
Had to remove and replace the tower after they tried to hang the FM antenna, since it wouldn't support the weight. That's why the tower closest to the building is a fatter one.

Those were fun days. Anyone heard from "Rockin' Ray" lately?

Re: WMDM is Back, or not!

This didnt last long. The CHR format is now gone. Now there some sort of conservative classic hits format (70s).

The sister station WSMD has also flipped. They were running an esoteric AC-ish format, but they've replaced that with the Dial Global "AC Active" format (basically a Hot AC). The station is still called "Star 98.3".

Too bad they dropped their wide variety when they added the Dial Global jocks. This station was always unique and would often play one of those "oh wow" songs you had not heard since it was released.

So, they've replaced a soft a/c/nostalgia format that nobody in a 100 mile radius was doing. Then, they replaced what could be considered what was the area's only "Jack-like" format for canned Dial Global product. Wonder what they will do with WKIK?

And does anyone listen to their other AM station WPTX?
