WMED 89.7/WCRQ 102.9 OFF AIR/LIGHTNING STRIKE

While travelling waaaaay down-east in Lubec, and on Campobello Island, New Brunswick earlier this week, I noticed Maine Public Broadcasting's WMED 89.7 off the air. A call to MPBN's Office confirmed they were off the air due to a lightning strike to their tower last week in Meddybemps. There is also note of it on their website mpbn.net. As of this (Thursday) morning they are still off the air.

Also off air was WCRQ 102.9 which shares the tower with WMED. They have been off and on the past couple of days, running announcements that they will resume full service soon.

Travelling back from Lubec to Mount Desert Island I was amazed at how strong WBLM 102.9 was coming thru without WCRQ on. Surprisingly good signal along Route 1 and 182 from Machias thru the Blackwoods area of Franklin and into Ellsworth.

WBLM is a blowtorch---you can get the signal up I-95 almost to Bangor. Good station too.

before WCRQ signed on, BLM used to make it all the way up the coast, now the 2 100kw blowtorches battle it out past belfast and bucksport...in bangor it also helps BLM because the 102.9 WERU translator has been shut down

Just Like 105.1 WTOS.. it will go out Far into VT... I hear from a few longtimmers you used to get TOS in Burlington VT before the "cool" 105.1 signed on there.

WBLM I have picked up in Millinocket a few times and have it sounding but than WTOS! I also used to live in Bar Harbor and used to listen to WBLM every morning. Although there was some dead spots on the Island where even the local Bangor stations wouldn't come in!
