WMEJ Gulfport no longer Spanish?

Just had a very impromptu visit to the Gulfport and Ocean Springs areas and noticed that WMEJ is no longer doing Spanish language programming. The Le Mejor website is gone, too. Does anyone know what's going with them, or what their new name is, if any? All I ever heard was music, no commercials or IDs. For some reason it didn't "trigger" in my mind that this station had changed until I was already outside the coverage area today.

It was nice to get back to the MS coast, even if it was just for a short time. I spent the night in a cheap motel right down the street from the 1640 stick. That and WWL were the only AMs I could get in the ground floor room 24/7. Surprisingly, HD reception wasn't too bad with both MPB and 96.1 The Rocket (!) decoding by the window. I got a whiff of HD on 94.9 WKSJ and two N.O. stations but no decode.

I was also happy to get a few minutes of Radio Enciclopedia and something Cuban-sounding on 1540 for a bit, rather clearly, in Biloxi, during the day.

Other than that, the radio dial was pretty much the same as it was the last time I was there a few years ago…

The 1540 you heard is KGLA, Gretna (New Orleans), one of three Spanish AM signals in the city ... the others are WFNO 830 and WODT 1280. Like all Big Easy AM signals, 1540 comes to the Miss coast via salt water path.

If 1190 Bay St Louis was not successful as an Espanol outlet, they should probably shut it down ... as a small-town daytimer, its other choices are close to none.

KGLA… Can't believe I overlooked that! It really had me fooled. They were playing some tropical or Caribbean infused music, and even had that signature 'tinniness' that Cuban AMs tend to possess. I'll have to remember to listen to 1540 if I ever go back to New Orleans as that's the type of Spanish music I enjoy.

I think 1190 could survive if it were paired with an FM translator. 24 hour operation on FM would be a definite benefit. But it could only serve a small area like Gulfport. How about an all Vietnamese or Korean station? ;)

WFNO has a great signal. Radio locator has listed as a Daytime only operation Class B with daytime power @ 1.2 million watts  and night at 750 watts.

Wow, just wow.

Looks like they got flooded during the 2011 opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway, and applied for an STA to operate at 1/4 power ND while they fixed up the nominal 2-tower 5 KW day, 3-tower 750 watt array. All looks good except for that pesky decimal point thing.

Two decades ago I did a tour of duty as CE. One story from then was the location of the monitor point in the direction of WCCO. 830 is on the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain, so in their wisdom they located the point on the only accessible spots for 30 miles: the shoulder of the I-10 bridge over the lake. The twelve mile long bridge, chock-full of speeding drivers intent on getting down to New Orleans to get their drink on.

Yeah... I took that reading. Once.
