WMEL 1300

Rama has a very small, very cheap Transmitter, the collins stuff is still there, but not in use...can't
remember the make of the transmitter, but it is the smallest I've ever seen, and I'm told very poor quality.
There have been a lot of processing problems with 1300, ever since Harper leased it last March. Board
also has a lot of issues...

We put WAVW-FM 105 in Vero Beach on the air back in 1979 with a cheap ass CCA Xmitter..Burned up the first month..I was doing morings out of a mobile office building and looked out the door and saw smoke..Thought it was my cigarette..But lo and below it was the frigging transmitter! Sounds like the same deal

Got to give WMEL a lot of credit for gall ... they claim to be the award wining (what real award) talk to
me station ... give weather for the space and treasure coast .. when they hardly have a signal into
Melbourne, but, now, in an effort to advance the cause of radio... they are running a promo offering
offering spots for a whopping $1.00... yep, thank you WMEL 1300, for bringing back the famus DOLLAR
A HOLLER to radio...
Good grief, has radio come to this?????

who else (besides me) smells DESPERATION in the air.... ::)

Big Ape: Do you remember a guy who went by the air name of Mike Mitchell at WAVW during the Rowland era? The last I heard from him he was in sales in Cocoa Beach, about 20 years ago.

He must have been after me..There was one local guy, I think Ronny Hersey or something like that, the rest were Marty Rowland, Bubba Rowland, Myself and some flunky all night guy that more or less segued records. Giff somebody was in sales and a great one at that.  I liked that little station..and it was a money maker..Neever figured out why Bobby Rowland sold out to Clear Channel and moved to Sebring.  I understand he's in Rockledge now, my stomping grounds of the 60's 79's..

On another note, we did have one claim to fame from that era..I hear Ed McCarthy on CNN News all the time and he was WAVW's first News Director..Came from Tallahasse!

Is WMEL evin relavint anymore? They sound like there still on reduced power(Have the towers all been hooked up yet?) and an ad on the back of some local magazine talks about programs being on the air on WMEL that I have never heard them carry. Also shows they were suposed to carry(like last Monday's Magic against the Heat game) that don't get on the air.

What's the story with this station?

I've heard they were supposed to be at full power this week, indeed, the signal did sound better today, but
not sure if that is because of power increase. Towers are the issue with power..
WMEL has for years taken programs they don't run ... try NASCAR. Florida Gators sports, they didn't carry
a major Gator basketball game a few weeks ago, they miss a lot of Magic games... mostly because of not
having board op's.
For a while they had a new voice doing news/etc, but have not heard from him for a while.
Programs come and go, with no warning, have not heard any new advertisers in ages, have no idea how they
keep Rama paid.

i think they shoulda stuck with 920. there signal is way better. heck i can hear 920 sometimes here in altamonte...

They couldn't stay at 920, Harper lost that station/company. A catholic lay group took over the station and
it is now all religion all the time. When he knew he couldn't save 920, he leased 1300 from Rama and tried to
move all his programming etc. to Cocoa. Since then, he has lost almost ever show he had at 920.

An I dont recall ever hear a Gators basketball game on WMEL, so missing a game like you mentioned shouldn't be an issue.

And they are carrying NASCAR this year. I know cuz i heard it. What I dont get is the magazine ad that shows several shows airing on the station they jusat arent. Whuts up wit all dat?

920 as best I know, was lost because of a forced sale, to pay off investors. The station had been under
the control of a court appointed reciever for several years before the sale to Divine Mercy.

As far as programs, they have lost so many programs in the last year, it would be hard to keep up with
print ads.

Don Imus, Laura Ingram, Michael Savage, Dave Ramsey, Mark Levine, Man about town with Mark Pence,
are among the shows lost in the last year.

It is a shame that he lost almost every talk personality after the move. One he could pick up is Phil Hendrie. I love that guy. And, due to 1060 getting rid of Hendrie, he is available for the market. He will not lose Bill O'Reilly as 1060 has dropped that one, also.

If he wants a good signal, he should drop ties with 1300/Rama and lease 1060. It isn't the best pattern for a 50KW signal but it is better than what 1300 can offer him. Just my own personal opinion.

No one dropped Bill O'Reilly. O'Reilly ended his radioshow on his own. WMEL carried it all the way tothe end, when the network reoplaced it with Fred Tompson.

How did you miss that?
