WMEN

Hi,

Can you tell me who owns WMEN? Is it Clear Channel?

Also, what is "free radio FM?" Is this a man-talk format?

Is the man talk format making common in most markets?

WMEN is owned by: Jce Licenses, l.l.C.
and the station is out of, Royal Palm Beach FL

"free radio/ fm" is a term for a regular radio receivers that pick up standard FM/AM broadcasts

when its comes to picking up FM ( high definition ) HD-2 signals u need to buy a radio for that. ( hence term, not free... )
also same goes for Sirius and XM u need to buy for the receiver and pay for the service

YES - 'FREE-FM' is the trademarked brand name that has been given to many CBS Radio stations all across the nation that air male-oriented FM talk shows during the day (such as Opie & Anthony). It was basically CBS Radio's way of bidding adieu to Howard Stern. You can pay to listen to him over at Sirius, or you can listen to (our) shows for free. These stations are located in most of the big city radio markets (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Dallas, Philadelphia, Washington, Detroit, Phoenix, San Diego, and Baltimore).

THE MAJOR

You probably heard the promos for Free-FM by mistake. It happens during the Don and Mike show since they run out Washington on 106.7 Free-FM WJFK. James Crystal doesn't have an active operator behind the board except during Mancow. So their automation screws up every so often. The station is again like every radio company with 2 or more AMS. One AM gets special treatment over the other AM , and the other station is the bastard child (i.e WIOD over WINZ or WJNO over WBZT). so WMEN, is the little sister radio station that gets babysat all day.

Wouldn't it be WFTL that gets babysat?

And how long before James "Crystal" does us a favor and sells off the last few stations he has left?

Incorrect on many accounts. WMEN is staffed with operators from 6am to 7pm.

Don & Mike come out of DC, but Westwood One has a manual operator in NYC that must put tones on to cut out the local WJFK content. If they screw up, it goes to all the stations.

WMEN legal ID, if you listen, is now Boca Raton. Studios are in Fort Lauderdale

How am I wrong an all accounts?? I'm fully aware a syndicated show has to have SOMEONE running it - where it originates. Of course there's a board op at WJFK. My point was that there probably isn't one at WMEN. Don and Mike's clock is pretty simple and can be easily automated.

It has a construction permit to move the transmitter about 20 miles slightly southwest with Boca Raton as the new city of license. It was issued nearly a year ago. Right now it's in a neighborhood on the edge of the Everglades. The new site is located off US-27 about 7 miles south of South Bay. It looks like they're trying to rimshot the signal more towards Broward County.

The cue tones for a program can be missed in automation. The bottom line is ...the station is still being automated because you can still hear the cuetones during Don and Mike and Tom Leykis because you can hear the "chirp, chirp" sound which is the cue tones for all Westwood one Programming. No one can possibly be manually running the controls in live assist.

I've listened to the few times where the cue tones have been activated but the automation software that James Crystal uses didn't detect it. I worked for Clear Channel at WJNO and WBZT and the Prophet System screwed on cue tones all the time.

Now I wouldn't have let a full traffic report from WJFK go out over the air. That tells me right there that the station is babysat.

It happened Monday during the 4pm hour on Don and Mike and at the end of the 8pm hour tonight during Tom Leykis, where I heard 2 minutes of a filler song, and I ended up calling FTL's Call-in line to tell them about it.

No one was stadning by in the WMEN studio.

Ken Pauli...he needs to get on Steve Lapa's ass and get some budget money open to hire some new board ops. Just look for Clear Channel layoffs.

I'm getting out of my soapbox now

WRONG. There IS a board operator at the controls of WMEN weekdays during the day until 7pm. Go ahead. Call and ask.

Well, that's even more reason for JCE to sell off and get completely out of the business. I'm all for local, maintaining staff levels, etc., etc., but why you need a board op to run a completely syndicated format is beyond me.

Ok, AM, I believe you...but I also am becoming a fan of Tom Leykis, and I do like catching the FAU games and the sportspage so can some one stick around til 10pm. Rusty Humphries and Tammy Bruce I know are just filler to satisfy the TRN contract, and I don't really listen to those shows.

Hey AM, I'm really a listener of ManTalk. I really like the shows on there, so that's why I would like the station sound good. No one ever listens to WBZT, but man that station never screwed on my watch. I just want the same for the James Crystal stations.

Hey , let me know if they have any weekend shifts open. I'm game for some weekend work and i have a resume ready

First off, there is no "James Crystal". It's an amalgam of the owner Jim Hilliard's children's names: James and Crystal.

And to suggest that Ken Pauli march in and demand more money out of Steve Lapa obviously does NOT know Steve Lapa.
