WMEX

Joe McMillan, the afternoon host of WMEX, quit on Friday January 9, after he was told there was no money to pay him. Larry Justice continues to work for free. The station has sounded really good streaming, with original jingles, and the ME TV FM feed after 6 PM weeknights and weekends after 2 PM is also very creative. Me TV FM is a top 10 station in Chicago. Any one know the status of the FM translator? How long before the station is 24/7 ME TV FM? Does the station get paid to carry that?

Not really. The station is around 27th in 25-54. Almost all the audience is over 65 and has very limited advertiser interest and very low rates.

I'm told they had few if any advertisers and one of the problems described to me by more then one person is the DJ's are picking some of the music and the segues are quite.. erm... drastic.

How do you know whether Justice is working for free?

It was a tough time to resurrect and rebuild, from scratch, two dead, off the air AM stations (1510 WMEX and 1460 WBMS, Brockton), and then have a pandemic come in when he was ready to put them on the air, when local ad revenue is much more limited than usual. I hope they survive. WBMS's FM translator at 101.1 is on the air. As of recently, they haven't found a viable frequency and location for an FM translator for WMEX.

Gary Leavitt and probably Bob Katzen on Sundays are buying time and selling some ads. (One spot on Katzen's was Jerry Mathers pitching his merchandiise) What McMillan said was he was told he wouldn't be paid for a couple months then they'd catch up. He may remain as "WATD image voice". Long nights aren't helping as the signal is limited, but you do have the stream. The radio-locator maps show the night reach--if you're in Beverly at night you could pick up 1510 a bit but not so much in Wakefield or Reading.
The maps for WBMS show the FM translator can cover just about as much ground as the daytime signal for the AM.
They need it as WBMS is 30 watts after dark.
WATD could be covering some of the costs of the two AMs. Things can improve perhaps as the days get longer--and the
coronavirus tapers off with the vaccine etc.

But, MeTV's radio network also serves as a way for MeTV to promote their nostalgia TV network on affiliate radio stations nationally. The radio affiliates mention the local MeTV on-air and major cable television channels with automated local inserts at least once an hour along with the radio affiliates local top-of-hour ID, and at other spot breaks during the hour.

To clarify, WMRE, ME TV FM is on the "Franken" FM frequency of 87.75 Mhz and was #10 last month ages 6 and up. I fully understand the target demo that advertisers want, but the station has the most listeners of any station on 87.7 FM in the United States and has low expenses, as well as the promotional benefits mentioned. It is very well executed if you like the genre of music they play.
