WMEZ/Soft Rock 94.1 Morning Show Canned

WMEZ management fired Trey Matthews and Carol O'Day Friday morning after they mentioned the competition on air. Seems that Carol won a contest from Cat Country and was upset that they weren't going to let her claim it. The duo apparently called Cat Country (with their permission) and aired the call live on their show. Apparently management was not impressed - and they did not clear the stunt with their PD or management - and the two were fired immediately.

Ironically (perhaps), Friday was also the last day for Mike Sanders (PM Drive jock) who will be leaving the area. Longtime Pensacola vet CJ Whitmore will assume afternoon duties starting today.

Anyone looking for a morning gig?

I thought that was a creative bit. Where is managements humor? Just another Control Freak! Typical Small Market Petty BS!

The Clueless GM and his Hack PD shoud get the boot.

Nice to see CJ still banging away at it--good guy, good jock.

Don't know Trey & Carol--and, yeah, I see the humor. But... BUT... don'tcha think that most people would have recognized the touchy nature of the bit before they opened the mike, and maybe said to themselves "Self, maybe I oughta run this one past the boss before pulling the trigger?"

And they could've pitched the boss (PD? GM?) on it: "Hey, Cat's not a direct competitor... it shows our listeners that all radio people don't hate each other and we can poke fun at ourselves...and it'll create some street talk..." And the boss could've said "Well, actually AC and Country do share a lot of listeners..." or "Let me talk to their PD/GM first and make sure we're not causing World War III..."

In other words, don'tcha think most clear-thinking adults would have noticed those red lights flashing "Caution!" before diving in? Didn't they recognize that the bit could cost them their jobs? And if not, why not?

Now, having said all that, wouldn't it be great PR for WMEZ to amend the decison to a "suspension" and have the pair back on-air Monday morning? That is, assuming that all parties involved are reasonable people?

Wouldn't that be nice? However, I don't think that the powers that be would have that much creativity flowing through their veins! I didn't think the duo clicked at all... but that's just me.

For a seasoned radio vet like Trey Matthews to blatently do something like he did, I would have to think that he was asking to be fired. I've heard that things at Soft Rock have not been very pleasant, especially since Ivan forced them to take up residence with sister station and ratings leader WXBM in Pace. 94.1 is basically an afterthought in the grand scheme of things. And heck...they have little or no backing from corporate...Pamal won't even spring for repairing signal issues that started after Ivan (2004!) and worsened after Katrina. Both MEZ and XBM still have that problem.

Plus... just look at the great talent that has departed the station in the last couple of years: Kevin Peterson...Michael Stuart...Annie Sommers...Lu Valentino...do I need to go on? They have an inexperienced PD (his first PD gig) who cannot make any changes or decisions unless his consultant (I think he's some dude out of New York) tells him to. The imaging on the station is old and stale. Music is repetitive... They need a programmer who will come in and position the station to be extremely competitive, especially now that My 107.3 (their main competitor) is mostly syndicated... Cheap Channel for ya! 94.1 needs to shape up or Q100 is going to eat them for lunch! (Have you heard Lu Valentino?) Now 94.1 is off to a good start with CJ Whitmore in the afternoons - good solid jock who is familiar to many listeners. They need to recruit a first class morning show and let them do their thing. So there ya go! Will be interesting to see how 94.1 sounds in a couple months...

True, "Cat" does not directly compete with WMEZ.. but they do with WXBM which is owned by the same company as WMEZ. That is probably the reason they are so upset

Listen for a blast from Soft Rock 94.1's past to start filling in on the morning show starting Monday... A duo...

I would like to see them remove the girl at night as she's on three separate stations here.

99.9, 94.1 and 98.5 (on tropo)

I forget her name but shes annoying.

At least John Tesh let's the stations keep their format going. SIMIAN is a powerful tool at doing that.

Do they still use CD's or are they using WMA files? Some of the songs sound like 16K AAC files.. YUCK
