If it's still active on their website, the video of the WECT story is a little more detailed than the printer friendly version and mentions WECT's days as WMFD-TV. I notice both refer to WMFD as Wilmington's first radio station. However, the year before WMFD's sign-on, WRAM (1370, I think) left Wilmington's airwaves when it was purchased and moved to Durham as WDNC.

I had the pleasure of working for WMFD in the early 70's,(my first radio gig)
when the studio's were on Orange Street. I was on the air the night the
transmitter building burned down, a night I will never forget. WMFD at the
time had and FM "The Country Giant" now WWQQ. The fire actually started
in the FM Transmitter. Thank's to a loaner transmitter from WGNI they
were back on the air with 250 watts a couple of day's later. I was back
home in July and went by to see my friends at Next Media and saw the studio's.
I love the old GatesWay 80 they use on the air. Congradulation's WMFD!

Interesting post, but why all the apostrophes? The following words do not need them: studios, days, transmitters and congraTulations. Right?
