WMGH

saw on another thread that Mick Hagerty passed away and that he used to work at WMGH back in the 90s. speaking of WMGH, what is up with that station anymore? back in Hagerty's days, the station sounded really good, but now it's a weird trainwreck of a goofy morning show, an odd mix of AC music during the day (but not even good AC music ... lots of B-cuts), once i heard a talk show in the evening, some guy complaining about politics, sometimes high school ballgames at night, more crappy music during the overnight, weekends are all over the place. does this station have direction anymore?

Funny thing with WMGH. When Mick was there it seemed to be nothing but liners. Now that he's gone the station seems to be nothing ad-libbed rants by jocks who don't know the break should have ended 45 seconds ago. I think their formula for success should lie somewhere in the middle. They will always be about whether a show will sell or not. They would put four hours of senior citizens farting on the air if they can sign three sponsors for 13 weeks for it. As a result you get the melting pot that is WMGH. A morning show that has more cliches and repetition than an edition of Sportscenter. High school sports broadcasts as long as the salespeople are still buddies with parents of student athletes in a given district who also happen to be business owners. Polka music as long as there are still 38 people aged 67 and over to call Joe Manjack every Sunday for the same songs. And poor jocking as long as there are wanna-be DJ's out there willing to work for $300 a week or $200 a week plus their sales commissions.
WMGH is pretty much what WGPA would be if it were on the FM dial. But, the nice thing is they probably employ more people than T-102 and can serve as a learning ground for jocks starting out. Once again a shame, because they don't know what they have. If they would go country they could price cut Cat Country. Many businesses in Tamaqua/Lehighton can't afford Cat's rates, and they would give T-102 fits going after dollars in Pottsville and Southern Schuylkill County.

wow all of your analysis is right on. WMGH sure is WGPA on FM. funny thing is, i heard rumors that the owner of WMGH (Fulmer) and the owner of WGPA (Timmer) don't get along. not sure if its true or why, but it would be kinda funny. so much alike that they dont get along. you are so right about the jocks who talk endlessly about nothing. especially that one in the late afternoon and early evening. i'm not being mean here but the late afternoon dj has one of the oddest voices i ever heard on radio. regarding the polka music on sunday, i one time went to WMGH for an interview for an on-air gig but my interviewer tried talking me into a sales job saying i could easily make 25 k. wow, 25! lol he said how the polka guy on sunday can't walk down the street without fans beeping and yelling out of their cars. lol but WMGH, even though they try to market to all of Schuylkill and Carbon still tends to just be a tamaqua phenomenon. other parts of schuylkill are all listening to t-102. but you're absolutely right, if they did country, it'd be huge. the area doesn't have its own and the other country stations that come in in schuylkill (especially cat) are too far away or too expensive. then WMGH would be popular all over schuylkill instead of just the polka people in tamaqua.

wmgh and it's sister station wlsh...still love "block programming". does wlsh still play christmas music from nov. to jan?

I used to work at WLSH..... for Bud Angst. Totally block programming. Morning music/news show was with Tom Tkach... then came Ask Your Neighbor with Alice (Mrs. Bud) Angst, then Air Your Opinion with Bud (Mr. Bud) Angst (while he wasn't running for office in Carbon County. While he WAS running, there were substitute hosts.) Then came The Dutch Trader, on-air swap meet..... then music in the afternoon with Don Daniels.... until sign off. There was either HS or LL baseball some afternoons... if the game went too long... we signed off in the middle of the game with the promise to bring the scores to the listeners in the morning. Memories............................ whew!

i have a buddy of mine who i worked with after i worked tv news ft in baltimore and pt radio in the same market...he worked at wlsh for bud and the gang and our tv weather anchor was going to take a job there...but did not... they both said in the day wlsh calls meant w...worlds...largest....(edit porta pottie)...house. my wife via my deceased mother in law has a wlsh cookbook with many hunky polak and italian recipes with pix of bud aunt betty the contoller marko on the radio...etc. it is really funny.

have a great day to all. i enjoy the comradre of all of us who were are and then a part of this whacky biz..

Christmas music...Yes they do. Mick told me it was kept going until the "Russian Orthdox Christmas" in January. Tried to end it December 26th one year and caught hell from every halupki/halushki/pierogie making grandmother in Lansford.

not only did they block christmas music. does anyone remember bud used to block "patriotic music" on mem.day...4th of july and vet.day.

You're right, terp... Sousa Marches on Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day. They were sold in 15 min blocks with an opener, spot, and a closer. Everyone and their brother advertised. Here's another memory jogger... on Sundays.. we had Yoska Baci playing polkas from the sister station WPAM in Pottsville.... simulcast on WLSH... as "The Twin Towers of Polka Power!"

Bud Angst's brother Mickey was SM down there in WPAM land. Keep it in the family.
