wmgk hd-2 vs the old wogl

WMGK-HD2 has a broader variety of oldies, I am not saying more but they play more British Invasion, Beach, Instrumentals and Sad Songs, WOGL would not touch many of them, no Last Kiss or Sleep Walk on WOGL, I was told they stayed away from those type songs. They do not overload the listener with Soul, Motown or R&B, they balance the mix, not the way WOGL did and they throw in Marcie Blane, Leslie and the Teen Idols. So in a nutshell, I prefer and enjoy WMGK-HD2 over the old WOGL. I just hope they expand their playlist, Charley Lake assured me they will be adding many more cuts in the future and them being on an HD2 they can go wild. Also, they will be the official Christmas Station in October, using the fantastic former WPEN/WBEN HD2's library from the past years. It would be nice if they went to a main signal, maybe WPEN but we all know its all in the demos...:(

"Official Christmas station in October?" Bah, humbug! So, three whole months with no oldies station in town (again). Just so-called "classic hits."

"Official?" Isn't that a bit presumptuous for a sub-channel? Especially given the Bee's long-standing dominance in Christmas music.

I enjoyed Now 97.5's Christmas music variety, hopefully they use the same playlist on 102.9-HD-2.

They can play whatever they want on Oldies 102.9-HD2 because we are their only listeners. They don't stream, so the average person can't hear them. It's sad, because I do enjoy their format.

When Charley wrote back to me, he stated that they library will be improving every day, and the Christmas format will resurrect on the HD-2 in the late fall. He also said he has plenty of experience programming oldies stations which was his main duty in past employment. I think he knows what the public wants, even thought its the same type oldies (for now), that we have heard many times, he does mix it up and plays all brands of oldies not like what Tommy did at WOGL. The stereo separation is also a plus sounds great, I guess formats like this would help HD finally catch on, I do hope so.

Sorry, Charlie. Pandora lets me program what I want. The era of the "gatekeeper" deciding what the public wants is over.

Sounds like MGK-2 is aiming at the lowest common denominator auto traveler with an in-dash HD radio who can't or won't bother with alternate media choices. T'was inevitable I guess. HD programmers realize that their listeners will be people who accidentally found the radios put in their dashes by the car companies, not by anyone searching for advanced programming.

Goodbye, Deep Tracks, hello shallow playlist formats on HD. And yes, for the rest of us, hello internet, Pandora, Tune-In and 2-4Tb music hard drives. Goodbye FM and HD. At least there's still traffic and weather on AM, though it's just a short time before the GPS incorporates them both seamlessly.
