WMGK Mornings

Is it me or the Debella show terrible? I normally will switch over from MMR around 10AM to listen to Debby Calton but today I figured I would listen to John for a bit. John is no longer funny and show is just pretty lame. I guess he does well ratings wise on MGK but he really isn't up to Par with Debby Calton and Andre. I almost feel bad for Debella. Maybe he is just giving up or management is forcing him to play a lot of music.

I don't know if there is necessarily anyone or anything to blame for DeBella being stale. The classic rock format is become more of a music intensive format than it is a personality driven format. I think DeBella fits the demographic that WMGK is going after. You have to do the math: the listeners who were hardcore DeBella lovers in his days of WMMR and WYSP are now falling into that 25-54 demographic and are probably well in tune with his brand of humor and personality. I'm not saying that his schtick is for everyone, but for the people that like his show, it's probably because they've been his listeners for 20+ years in Philly...

I have been listening to him for 20 years and the thing is he now sounds like he is phoning it in. Its a shame..the guy use to be talented.

There is nothing wrong with Debella that does not happen to many radio personalities after too many years doing the same thing. He needs a change. Either a change in day-part or a change in stations. But he has been doing the same thing for too many years.

When in doubt, just imagine Stern doing morning drive on WMGK playing Paul Simon records.

exactly. Stern would never do that. Stern does a SHOW. John has taken himself from being a personality and turned himself into a liner reader jock who happens to have some other people around him. His news girl is great but I don't think she is even being effectively used. In a format like classic rock, I think you can get away with having a personailty driven morning show that only plays at most 3 songs an hour but maybe greater media is protecting Preston and Steve by not having a good morning show on WMGK.

Kinda like how the old WNEW-FM in New York went through the motions by offering up unattractive fare during the time its sister station, then-classic rock station WXRK/"K-Rock," had Stern in morning drive. "Mason & Kolinsky"... "The Sports Guys"... Even a sports show with one of the WFAN hosts dubbed "The FAN In The Morning" (this, of course, during the time Imus was still on WFAN)...

yes sir. They protected the king by putting on shows that would neither draw an audience or hurt the station. Greater Media is doing the same thing with john Debella.

well..he stole the morning zoo concept from Scott Shannon in NYC but the show did have some funny characters. His shift now is just jocking lots of a music. I also heard he is trending way behind the rest of the other day parts at MGK. I am sure his show is not cheap and if you are only going to have a guy read liner cards and do giveaways, you might as well hire someone for half the money.

1029's show aint that bad. hell, i get a kick out of the bad name of the day. but i do prefer FBHW on 1057 The Hawk and P&S on MMR

I never really 'got' DeBella's show on MMR in its peak - Hawaiian shirt day, a few comedy songs played at the same time every week, the "Zookill Expressway", etc. There was a big deal made over Howard Stern taking over as top rock morning show but I thought (John) Harvey's dry wit on WIOQ, killed off by the Zoo, was a better show.
