Aside from removing the 'All 70's' label, taking Bread, Captain & Tenielle and KC & The Sunshine Band out of the rotation and morphing to classic hits in 1995 or so, WMGK really hasn't done much in the way of updating at all. To me, they're sound like WYSP in their first incarnation as classic rock. I think for classic rock to be a viable format in this day and age, you need to jettison bands like The Beatles, Crosby, Stills & Nash and a few others of the Woodstock generation, out of the playlist. The Stones and The Who and Zeppelin are from that era, but they still have that rock edge to their sound that doesn't let them fall into the 'oldies' category. They need to stop ignoring some of those heavier bands of the 70's, 80's and even 90's now. Pearl Jam have been around for 21 years now. Throw them into the mix...Metallica, too. If it doesn't work, then at least they can say they tried and then tweak the format back to the lighter side. I know - WYSP tried the harder classic rock approach and failed, so why do it with WMGK? I think WYSP failed because of an identity crisis that Philadelphia radio listeners got tired of quickly, going from active, to talk, to active, to classic, to sports. WMGK isn't a bad station, they have solid talent and strong numbers. It just hasn't been brought in to the 21st century yet...
