WMGM-FM status?

What's the current configuration at WMGM-FM?

The signal sounds much WORSE than before. I was in lower Cape May County this weekend and 103.7 was SOLIDLY WXCY, here in Southern Ocean County 103.7 is spotty.

When they were atop the Taj Mahal they had a MUCH better signal.

I see the original WOND building has just been cleared of the fire remains (it burned in May). It may have been on the backup while they rerout cables and such to get ready for a permanent facility.

yes , and tom mcnally has tons more info. on this .. he posted about this a while back ... but the signal is better than right after the fire , trust me here

The signal here in Bayville is better, but not what it was prior to the fire. When the 0.4 kW signal was in place, I could not receive WMGM at all. And, I believe WXCY did an upgrade of their signal not too long ago. That "philly bridges" quote isn't all that accurate any more.

I was on I-295 in Gloucester County the other day and 103.7 was all WXCY. I remember it used to be a fight with WMGM usually winning. Not anymore. I haven't heard WMGM on the bridges in a long time, either.

Re: WMGM-FM status? - Power

WMGM is operating with a substantial amount of power, the signal
should be close to normal. They are about -3 db from 50,000 watts,
which SHOULD be barely noticable. (I verified this personally today)

Tom:

Theoretically, what you say should have barely any impact on the signal. Yet, it isn't as good as it was. I used to have a pretty solid signal here in Bayville. It is much better than the setup you ran right after the fire, but it doesn't match the pre fire signal. I drove down Rt. 70 to i-295 on my way to Washington this past saturday, and sampled the signal at various points. The one place it seems stronger is in the Evesham/Medford Twp. areas. Not listenable for the most part on 295 south of the 42 freeway, where it fights with WXCY Havre de Grace...with XCY winning.

They should be back to normal in a few months. The local coverage is solid, in any case. That's what counts in ratings and with advertisers.

I know. Screw the people who might want to listen to it who aren't in its 54 or 60 dBu contour. They don't count. Hell, using that approach, every FM should be a 3 KW Class A. Yet, the station boasts (inaccurately, at least for now) "from the Philly bridges to the Jersey Shore beaches....from Toms River to Cape May."

Tom, so you know, all those car dealers who advertise on WMGM...they seem to sell some cars to folks here in Ocean County. I see LOTS of Atlantic County dealership decals on cars here. So, I bet at least one group of your advertisers might not appreciate the diminished signal!

Whoa Don ! For one thing, I don't work there - I am just stating the facts.
(I did build the original 50,000 watt facility back in the 80's when I was
Chief Engineer and Program Director)
Secondly, the building BURNED TO THE GROUND and they lost everything.
50,000 watt FM transmitters aren't sitting around on the shelf, they need
to be built, and it takes time, plus - you can't put one in a temporary trailer
and then move it again. They weigh about 3000 pounds and need special
cooling and power. With environmental issues, etc, this all takes time.

WMGM is doing the best they can under the circumstances.

Tom:

I thought when I saw the plethora of calls under your name that you were still involoved in some way. No offense intended! And I know that you don't buy a 50 kW xmitter off the shelf. These things take time! At least I CAN hear the station now :)

There's probably an insurance company issue here, too. Insurance companies don't exactly cut checks within hours of buildings burning down.
