WMGM-TV 40 airing in Philly: should it happen?

Should Comcast, RCN and service electric pick up WMGM-TV 40 and add it to their systems so that the entire Philadelphia market viewers can see the channel if WCAU OK's it.

I'd love for Comcast to run it in Cherry Hill. I'm considering switching to DirecTV.
I get homesick. What can I tell you? I was there for 13 years.

They'd only get Philly carriage if they dropped their NBC affiliation.

On one hand, they could move their 11pm newscast an hour earlier to 10 and have it an hour. Reach more viewers, and the staff gets to go home an hour earlier. But then, what would they run between 8-10 as a lead-in, and something for the weekend is needed too. I know WFMZ runs Family Feud and then just runs infomercials on the weekend, but WFMZ has great support from Service Electric cable in Allentown whereas Comcast won't support WMGM to any extent beyond what's required.

Comcast would give them problems for new service areas. Comcast would allow them coverage only if they opted for digital-only status (say Ch.254 or Ch.299), putting them at very low exposure. WMGM would have to spend a lot on advertising, getting the word out it was worth the whole thing.

On that point would it be worth it to save the news, or just become an RTN station or infomercial-only thing. Status quo is probably the best.

I think they might have best luck getting on the Verizon Fios Southern NJ lineup w/o changes needed to programming, if anything.

DISH Network also carries WMGM-TV. Dish also has a deal for Cinemax for 2 years for $0.01/a month. You can get a basic dish and receiver from craigslist or ebay, install it, and its just $9.99 a month for locals-only and $0.01 extra for Cinemax (5 channels) with paperless billing and credit card autopay.

I really don't understand why we need another NBC affiliate airing in Philly. Can someone explain the benefits?

Please clarify...

Do DBS subscribers in the Philly area (who are outside of the Atlantic City area) receive WMGM-TV as part of their local package?

Yes. Also, even though the station is licensed to Wildwood and targets Atlantic City, they do a lot of Vineland-Cumberland County news coverage, even though Comcast has taken WMGM off the analog lineup in Vineland, on the premise they are duplicative to Ch.10 and Ch.10's city of license (Philadelphia) is closer to Vineland as the crow flies (distance calculator I checked is the same, so its debatable). Comcast didn't want the competition for the cable advertising in South Jersey. Getting on satellite was a necessary step to stay relevant.

Yes. I have it in Chester County, PA. on DirecTv. The Comcast lineup here doesn't even carry NJN. They do have NJN-2 on digital cable.

ding12, Bill_W:

Thank you for your responses.

When I was in Atlantic City/Pleasantville the only newscast I watched was from WMGM-TV 40. All other newscasts focused too much on Philly. I went to Philly once...and that was to catch a flight out.
