WMIB is playing Rihanna, Beyonce, T.I., T - Pain, Ne-Yo ... is Hip Hop coming back AGAIN???

103.5 THE BEAT "The Most R&B, Hip-Hop and Old School Joints"

All sources are saying 103.5 THE BEAT has returned to its Urban format. IMO, they should've stayed with the Hip-Hop format instead of trying UrbanAC. This finally gives WEDR/99 JAMZ overdue competition. Now, 99 JAMZ will have to change their postioner which is currently "South Florida's ONLY Station for Hip-Hop and R&B." Hopefully, The Beat will hit the streets harder, add new DJs(Steve Harvey & Keith Sweat aren't going anywhere), focus on new music and add mixshows.

that station always sounds confused hip hop hatin' harvey in the am will not help. neither will sweat at night. the other jocks and the pd are below major market

Plain and simple, Clear Channel's strategy in Miami is to try formats that work on their New York market affiliates.

-Z100 and Y100 (for example given how well the morning show does in both markets).
-In the Beat's case, their NY counterpart is Power 105.1 WWPR. The new format is edging their strong urban competition (Hot 97 WQHT). Power has a similar slogan (R&B, Hip Hop and Back in the Day Joints.)

It's actually not a bad strategy since after visiting Ny Last week and studying the radio up there. The markets are very similar.

Anyone agree with me?

no focus @ the beat ,the music is all over the place, jocks are horrible, they are trying to hit all demos , sounds like a very small market radio station one of the worst sounding urban stations

Sure, they are as similar as Karachi and Wichita.

??? I don't know what "new" direction Clear Channel Miami is trying to do with THE BEAT. Ratings have showed that HOT 105 is clearly the Urban AC leader in the market. From visits to Miami every year, I remember when 103.5 The BEAT first signed on. Baka Boyz mornings, Big Tigger middays, Nina Chantele afternoons and Papa Keith nights. They were full of energy and all over South Florida, especially during Memorial Day weekend. Plain and simple, 99 JAMZ will continue to have repetition and have the Hip-Hop/R&B lead until someone can knock them out the box. If Clear Channel were smart, they'd go after Big Lip Bandit for mornings and save Keith Sweat for a later time slot during evenings. Since Steve Harvey and Keith Sweat are under contract with Premiere(I think), they aren't going anywhere since Clear Channel is a part of that company. Too Bad!

David,

Would you mind explaining why you say that the New York and Miami markets are so far apart.

How can we count the ways?

1. Population. 3.6 million vs. 15.3 million 12+
2. Lifestyle. Jobs, climate, attitude, heritage.
3. Ethnicity. NY 20% Hispanic, high percentage assimilated. 15% Black. Miami, 50% Hispanic, less assimilation, 21% Black.
4. Miami is closer to every nation in the Caribbean basin than to New York. Many residences owned by Latin Americans.
5. In Miami-Dade, Spanish is almost a necessity to succeed... a lot of Miami's business is done with LAtin America.

I could go on, but I covered many of the points.

My question is,, Will The Beat pose any threat to Power 96 with their Young Latino Audience,,, Will Power be forced to go more CHR, or maybe even go back to Dance Again,,, they have played a few Dance songs lately and had good success with them.... I dont think they could take on Y-100,,, and WEDR focuses on Blacks mostly,, so what will Power do now I wonder.. I like the station and would like them to stay Rhythmic, and keep Laz and stuff, but if they could play some More Dance Music it would be great... Im afraid if they go Pure Dance they will end up a bottom Feeder like Party 93.1... So tell me,,,, I know this is Off topic, but just tell me, what should Power do to stay fresh and competative without flipping from Rhythmic,,, just be more mainstream hip hop with rhythmic POP/Dance like Rhianna,, and no Ballads,,, Ditch the Late Night slow Jamz,,, Because Power always Played some Dance music and pop until the Beat came on the scene, of course at that time the Beat played alot of Reggae and sounded more Rhythmic than Urban...HMMM What to do???

all power has to do is keep on doing the same thing, the beat is not threat it is a poorly programed station with small talent jocks outside of steve harvey who hates hip hop!

I guess your right.. Powers numbers are still good, and While all three stations play hip hop,, power 96 focuses more on Hispanics and White people, while WEDR and WMIB are both for the Black Audience... I dont see how Steve harvey is really gonna make it with a Hip Hop station,, he's better for Urban AC.. I like him as an Actor,, but not so much on the radio.

Clear Channel has some type of contract with syndicating the Steve Harvey Morning Show and Keith Sweat's late night show. If there is a Clear Channel Urban, Rhythmic or Urban AC station in any town , best to believe Harvey and Sweat is on it if no other station in town has them already. Steve Harvey is actually on several hip-hop stations in Florida already(95.7 THE BEAT/Tampa, BLAZIN 102.3/Tallahassee, 102 JAMZ/Orlando, 99.3 The BEAT/Panama City and 93.3 The BEAT/Jacksonville).

Off topic a bit,, but how is Miami going to support 3 Urbans,,, 101.9 JAMZ, Power 95.3, and now 99.3 THE BEAT... I dont know how Power's number are at this time, but they may want to consider Dance again before they canabalize each other.... 3 Urbans in any one market is tough,, unless its a place like Miami where one is Heritage and has Adult listeners as well,,, one of them is pop/Dace friendly for Latinos and Whites, and the other is a pure Hip hop for the younger kids with no R&B... Oh well, I guess if Atlanta could pull it off,,,, of course Atlanta is much bigger and Blacker than Orlando, and most people still Consider THE BEAT as more of a POP station cause thats how they started,, they arent getting many black listeners, and their metro signal isnt that strong.

102 JAMZ and POWER 95.3 are the only 2 stations in Orlando that play Hip-Hop. 99.3 The BEAT is in Panama City. As for here in Atlanta, we have 2 Urbans and 1 CHuRban, 95.5 THE BEAT. Its your typical Cox owned CHuRban station playing only Top 40 Hip-POP and recurrents with no real "HIP-HOP" prescence. Never in the black community nor Urban side of town, but they claim to be #1 for Hip-Hop, go figure.

Are you talking about Miami? Power in Mia is on 96.5, WEDR, Jamz, is on 99.1 and WMIB, The Beat is on 103.6. In 12+.Power is #7 and WEDR is #4, while WMIB is 16th. Keep in mind that the market is 22% Black an 50% Hispanic. There is plenty of room for 3 rhythmic contemporary stations (and uban AC WHQT is #1) as is seen by the ratings.

Yeah, there was no way 2 Urban AC stations would last in a city like Miami. They should've relaunched as CHR/Rhythmic with heavy Hip-Hop and less R&B as "WILD 103.5" The BEAT names is known around town for being the sleepy station that plays R&B ol' school. Remember, they never changed the name only the logos after they went from Urban to Urban AC the first time. The jocks need to be up there game or be given the pink slips. Its clear that Clear Channel doesn't want to give up on the Urban audience in South Florida, but they need help bad!

I totallly goofed in my last post,, I was talking about Orlando,, and for some reason thought 99.3 The Beat was in O-Town too..My Bad... But anyway,,, David Eduardo is right,,, Miami is 50% hispanic,,,, Power doesnt have much to worry about...

yeah were you on something in that last post? lol, yeah power dosn't have to worry
