WMID NIGHT RECEPTION

They seem to be very weak at night, not like the old top 40 days. Going west on the WHP they start to fade at the GSP overhead. This cannot be more than 5 miles from their XTMR. I don't know how they are up and down the coast at night, they were good back in the day, but its very disappointing the way they cannot get out going west. By the time you hit 575 which is under 10 miles, they are gone. Daytime, they are listenable and start to come in at the 42/ACX split which is over 40 miles from the XTMR. Does the night really hamper them that much, WURD for being directional with considerably lower power at night (or so they claim), has a much larger coverage area at night than WMID?

We've been through this before. WMID's actual signal
strength is as good as it ever was. The conditions
on the AM band have changed ...
* in the old days - everyone on 1340 reduced power to 250 watts
at night - so the interference level was lower
* in the old days - there were plain old light bulbs
* in the street lights, they didn't emit interfering RF
* in the old days, there were no computers kicking up the
noise level

The station hasn't changed - the conditions on the band
and the radios have.

You do mean you receive WMID during the day, not a night. That is a good catch for North Philly, where-abouts are you located, on the east or west side of Broad Street. In the 60's, I would always catch WMID during the day, just by rotating my portable radio, and nulling WHAT, but not in todays radio world. The only AM I can receive from the South Jersey Shore is WCMC, loud and clear until sunset. Once and awile I can receive WIBG, WOBM-A is also a good catch most of the time.

WMID's cross saltwater paths were pretty amazing back in the 70's. At the Ct. shore...in the Westbrook area..WMID used to be all over local WNHC in New Haven. And going south on the outer banks in North Carolina...WMID came in pretty well. And I can remember in the Trenton area they would be fighting it out with WHAT in Philly...but neither was listenable.

I don't know if anyone can confirm this but years ago stations were limited to 18 minutes per hour of commercials. I had heard that "seasonal" markets...like AC & Wildwood were exempt from that limitation. It seemsd like WMID and WCMC ran a ton of commercials. And especially on WCMC...very local amusement & entertainment spots with massive repetition!

I seem to recall the seasonal maximum was 22 minutes per hour.
