Just curious, would it have been a smart move for Gary and the Equity suits to have bought WHAT and simulcast WMID, daytime the signals would overlap for greater coverage and a Philly presence. Or just shut down WHAT and put WMID directional to the west with 5kw to penetrate the Philly market, what a great format its a shame not to enjoy it here.
 
I’ve heard of a few situations where overlapping co-channel AM signals have deployed time and frequency synchronization to minimize interference in a simulcast... Often, this has been employed by unlicensed Part 15 broadcasters attempting to solidify and extend coverage. Two examples come to mind: Tybee Island, SC and near Myrtle Beach (the North Strand), NC. I have not personally heard the results of such an arrangement though.

Stations operating on 1230, 1240, 1340, 1400, 1450, and 1490 are limited in the continental U.S. to 1kw. A 5kw scenario would not be permitted due to FCC rules.
 
And you'd still need to deal with the issue of 1340 WKAP(formerly WRAW)ReadingPA
It's a graveyard frequency for local service.
