WMJC - Euthanasia needed

The subject of mercy killing has long been debated but maybe it's now time to consider it for a radio station - 94.3 WMJC.

Last Saturday afternoon, DOMONIQUE was doing her show and, as part of a public service, wanted to let everyone know where they could find the cheapest gas on Long Island. She told us that longislandgasprices.com showed a Hess station in Kings Park had the lowest price of $3.09 per gallon.

The station was packed.
It had the $3.09 gas.
It also had the green FRESH 102.7 van parked right in front!

What an interesting strategy this station has demonstrated over the past 3 1/2 years:
1) Lose the WLIR listeners you were trying to attact
2) Lose your own listeners
3) Personally hand over what's left of your shrinking listener base to the competition.

Shear brilliance!

There are many many hard working talented people at WMJC but someone needs to mercifully put this station out of its (and our) misery once and for all.

I'd have to agree. This station had a ready-made audience handed to it when the original 'LIR was sold and went off the air. Picking up personalities like Malibu Sue even gave those listeners hope that they might be able to continue hearing something on the air resembling their former favorite radio station.

Instead, it seems that WMJC can't make up its mind on what it wants to be, so in the end, it turns out not to be anything for anyone. It isn't anywhere as edgy as LIR ever was, even in its last days. It can't compete in the oversaturated Hot AC demo with the likes of PLJ and now Fresh and even Jack FM. It isn't "soft" enough to take on the AC's like Lite FM and WALK and sister station KJoy and get the office/store listeners. The signal is pretty lame too, especially when considering that it gets torn up in much of its *primary* contour by the 94.3 out of CT.

Finally, they got rid of whatever little name recognition they had by ditching the Island 94.3 name in favor of the call letters-WMJC, which I doubt many people will take the time to remember. And it's too bad, as you said, as there's many quality radio folks at the station.

how many people have come and gone thru those doors since the last days of it playing Country?

I remember Jay Latterman was once the PD? Jeez how long ago was that?

Actually, I don't think there have that many jock changes in the current format.
IIRC, the format started with 3 jocks that only used their first names on air: Rocky (aka Tom Pantaleo), Amanda (Clarke) and Charlie (Connoly). They switched around their shifts a few times. I don't recall any other weekday on-air personalities between that crew and the current lineup (Phathead, Malibu Sue, Jon Daniels, Rob Rush).

The problem is the company that owns it is too cheap to commit to a format that would require spending to execute it properly. Thus you get what is on there. A cheap format.

If the Gas Station Was Packed, that would indicate that Domonique and WMJC have a lot of listeners. That also reinforces the fact that they have loyal listenres that are actually listening to the station and responding. This is reassuring to business owners as it would appear that advertising on WMJC will bring lots of traffic into your business!

It seems very weird because WMJC executes the format with promotions and the whole thing...it seems like they need to do something how about a shock jock...would the ratings go down with DLR in the morning..lol

I went back a few webspages to when there were a few "others"

Dan Binder was PD
I also remember someone named Bill, being PD
JOJO was there for a spell. (what rock did he crawl back under)
You mentioned Rocky, Amanda and Charlie LOMBARDO, not Connely.
There was a guy on once and a while called "BoBO" who I think was an intern.
Mary Perez was on in some form, news I guess, as was Frank Brinka and Kim Burke!
Domonique was in the mix and from what their old website says, someone named Sara was co host in the morning.
Also somewhere, Scotty Hart was a fill in, I only remember hearing him, I could be wrong!
add to the WLIR castaways, and there you have it.

Probably because Fresh was there?

But it's an overall cheap presentation. Poor audio quality, restricted and safe playlist. No creativity. It just reeks of an overall station that has nothing to offer to anyone. B-103 is interesting and I give them credit there... but MJC is just... awful

IIRC...
- I don't remember Dan Binder with Island, though he was Assistant Engineer for WCTO-WMJC and WGSM during his WLIR days (before becoming a PD update).
- Bill? Might you be thinking of Barnstable mate Bill Edwards, PD on KJOY?
- I remember Mary from WLIX, WALK Pillow Talk, WLUX, Love 96, and Magic 94.3... but not after it flipped to Rock simulcasting WRCN. Maybe you're thinking of Addie Triolo (Country AM driver), who also was previously heard on WLIX and WLUX.
- After Kim did WLIR news, she went to KJOY news. But it's not unusual for Barnstable staff like her and Frank Brinka to be heard on sister stations.
- "Rocky": a great guy to work with in any format. Tom was another WRCN alum.

Bring back the 'CTO letters from Allentown, find another old masive cart machine that takes up the entire studio wall, and revive the Beautiful Music format. ;)

If not, then it's gotta be "Kaptain Kevin in the Morning... on 94.3 AND 103.9, Long Island's BEST Rock!"

The gas station could have been packed purely because it was the cheapest one around. Dominique got the information off a website, which many many others could very well have visited as well. If the Fresh van was there as well, that could have been an added attraction. It could have also been word of mouth from motorist to motorist, friends, family, etc. to go to the gas station with the lowest prices. So it's hard to tell if the place was packed due to being promoted on 94.3 or for other reasons (probably a little of all the above). That being said, it doesn't take that many people to make a gas station look crowded. Island could, hypothetically speaking, only have 50 listeners, but if they all went to the same gas station soon after hearing the announcement, the place would be packed.

Thanks for the correction on which Charlie it was on air. I had that mixed up.
I also forgot about JoJo, who was there for a while.
"Dan" (couldn't find a last name) was on-air for a few months in '03.

I did some checking through the internet archives, and found the following basic, weekday lineups:

1. Rocky, Amanda, Charlie
2. Rocky, Amanda
3. Rocky, Dan, JoJo
4. JoJo, Rocky
5. JoJo, Malibu Sue, Jon Daniels, Rob Rush
6. Phathead, Malibu Sue, Jon Daniels, Rob Rush

For a station that has had the disappointing ratings that it has had for the 6 years it has been on the air, it really has had a relatively small turnover of on-air personalities.

Thanks for the lineups, out of all the ones posted I enjoyed the original lineup, the music was fresh, the jocks excited, and it was something new.

Where is Amanda these days she has vanished off the air, in fact so has Rocky, who isnt on WBAB anymore.

I guess MAry Perez was doing news...........where is she??

Island 943 is like the bermuda triangle for jocks HA HA HA

Lineup list edited with approximate dates:

Summer 2001-Spring/Summer 2002 - Rocky, Amanda, Charlie (with the order changing for a while to Amanda, Rocky, Charlie)
Spring/Summer 2002-Spring 2003 - Rocky, Amanda
Spring 2003-Fall 2003 - Rocky, Dan, JoJo
Fall 2003-Winter 2004 - JoJo, Rocky
Winter 2004-Winter 2005 - JoJo, Malibu Sue, Jon Daniels, Rob Rush
Winter 2005-Present - Phathead, Malibu Sue, Jon Daniels, Rob Rush

Dan Binder was definately there. I remember talking with him on the phone once - was sort of bummed when he moved to San Antonio. He had a lot of potential to do good with that station. Also, wasn't MJC one of the first LI stations to use ENCO?

Bring me back the old WCTO days - where's L&L Camera when you need them?

I agree about Dan. I actually talked to him on the phone about the 3p shift before he hired JoJo. He is one of the only program directors that would take my phone call. I think that when he was the program director he had the highest ratings the station ever had as Island.

If Binder had the highest ratings, why'd they fire him?? ???

The story I recall was that Dan Binder got a better gig and left fast.
