WMJX to voice track overnight

A friend of mine sent me this.....

"Did you hear about Magic's overnight guy Michael Burns? He'll be voice tracking. :( Even weekend overnights will be tracked. You know it's really bad if Magic has joined the voice tracking band wagon"

This same rumor was posted once before, maybe a year or so ago, and it turned out not being true. Hopefully it won't be this time either.

1) It's not voicetracked already?

2) Why wouldn't it be? Are they doing prize giveaways at night? Otherwise, what's the point?
It's comforting to hear a live human voice on the radio, even in the middle of the night.

Father, you should do your 4:55am Sunday show live on WBZ... they may even let you do a crossover with the morning news anchors...

Then again, the crossover would probably be longer than the show itself lol.

But how do you know? If done correctly you really can't tell the difference.

Does My Long Lost Freind Jen Mckay still do the Overnite Weekend gig there? Hopefully if She is, She is not affected by this move. She has Talent. She could have made something with Herself (Radio Wise) If She wanted to.

As a longtime friend of Michael Burns, I can confirm that as of tonight's overnight (1/31 into 2/1) he wil be voicetracking his overnight shows Sun. night/Mon. morning thru Thurs. night/Fri. morning. He had told me almost 2 week ago about the change. He will continue to host "Sunday Morning Country Oldies" on Greater Media's co-owned WKLB. Also, starting tomorrow (2/1) David Allan Boucher gets an extra hour added to his shift, he will be live till 1AM, and Michael's VT show will run 1 to 5:30.

On a personal note: I've been a friend of Michael's for over 30 years. He has been in radio since 1974 (first job was weekends at WOTW AM/FM Nashua), then his first time gig in 1976 at WLLH (nights, then middays), which is when I first became acquainted with Mike, and I actually worked for him for 6 months in 1984 when he was PD at WHAV. (He left, I stayed 3 more years). He's been with Greater Media since 1987, first as middays on WMEX 1150, when they dumped the oldies he transitioned over to Magic for weekends/fill ins, and got the overnight spot not long afterwards. If I'm not mistaken, after Nancy Quill and David Allan Boucher, he's the third longest lasting Magic personality. As I told him when he told me the news, at least you still have a job in radio, considering how many other good talented radio & TV folks in the Boston market have been sent "to the beach". He does consider himself fortunate to still have a job in Boston radio, albeit a reduced schedule.

Mike Roberts had been doing the weekend overnights recently.

Mike comes in after Audrey at 8:00, I don't know how long he stays on, I am assuming midnight.

Mike has a day gig on an AM out on the MA/CT border on a country station doing morning drive, plus I think he is the person behind the internet station www.litefavorites.com

When somebody voice tracks, do they typically make the same money for an air shift, or does the station pay them less? Well... now that I think about it, it would be stupid to pay the same amount for programming that isn't LIVE. So I guess voicetracking is how they save money. Less for talent and more in the pockets of the radio station. Do I have this right?

Less for talent and more in the pockets of other media that get the ad dollars that radio doesn't get anymore. That's more likely to be the case with the private Greater Media. They don't own that many stations...they can't cook the books like the bigger companies could.

Lite Favorites seems to get a lot of buzz. Their roster is a who's who of Boston radio people, so I'd imagine somebody from Magic is behind it.

Actually, he was already doing weekend overnights on WMJX for a while before they dumped the oldies on 1150 WMEX. I remember because I was doing oldies Friday and Saturday overnights on WMEX while Michael was on WMJX at the same time down the hall. This was in 1988.

This is a huge change, even for David Allen Boucher. In fact, he just made a mistake on the air, saying that he was on 'till midnight. I hope this is the only change they make, and they don't pick up Delilah. Maybe someday she'll extend her hours, too.

But how do you know? If done correctly you really can't tell the difference.

For a music station, this is true to a point. But when a building blows up at 3AM in the middle of a waterfront suburb like in Danvers a few years ago, suddenly a voicetracked station is a ticking time bomb of its own. How long before the listeners realize that the reason your station isn't saying anything about a major event is because there's nobody in the studio but a computer?

Again, for Magic? Probably not really a problem...even if it were a major event in the music industry that's directly applicable to their format and listeners, it's unlikely to happen overnight and/or unlikely to be a big enough deal that it can't wait until the morning drive team comes in. But for a lot of stations, even music stations, it can really bite you on the butt.

So does this mean that WBZ is now the only station in the market to have a live personality (Steve LeVeille) between 1-5AM?
